ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Certificate, Diablo Valley College, Music Industry Studies and Music Program.

Overview:
Rafael Macedo – Guitars, Vocals, Composer, Producer Rafael Macedo began his musical journey at age 12 with the acoustic guitar, and by 14, he had already transitioned to electric. Entirely self-taught until the age of 17, Rafael’s hunger for deeper musical understanding led him to study guitar and music theory with Alexandre Lima—his future bandmate and longtime friend—at the renowned Prediger Music School in Porto Alegre, Brazil. After two years of intense study, Rafael was invited to join the Prediger faculty as a guitar instructor in 1998. That same year, driven by a desire to explore a wide range of musical styles and ideas, he formed the earliest version of what would eventually become Wreck of Time (formerly known as The Element). Outside of the band, Rafael also immersed himself in classical music. He joined the Orchestral Choir of OSPA (Porto Alegre Symphonic Orchestra), where he studied vocal technique with Decápolis de Andrade and Maestro Manfredo Schmiedt. During this time, he participated in major works such as Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Verdi’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Rafael later moved to California, where he completed the Music Business and Composition programs at Diablo Valley College. His most ambitious and personal achievement to date is the full composition of the concept albums From Sand – Part I and Part II, which tell a deeply immersive story through a blend of progressive metal, cinematic elements, and emotional depth. From Sand – Part II was released in 2022. In 2024, Rafael Macedo took full charge of the mixing and overall production of Wreck of Time’s music, further expanding his creative control and deepening the sonic identity of the band. Today, Rafael continues to manage, compose, and produce for Wreck of Time, while also teaching guitar and music theory. He works as a freelance composer and arranger for various projects in music and media.
EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching Guitar/Music Theory for almost 20 years.  I have a Certificate of Music Industry Studies from the Diablo Valley College, which was completed in 2014. As for now, I'm a music/composition major at the Diablo Valley College, transferring from a 2 year college to get my bachelor degree. Besides composing for my band, I write orchestrated instrumental music from classical to soundtracks, etc. I believe that each student require a different approach, depending on their level. For example: if they want to be a professional musician, or if they just want to learn music as a hobby.  I also believe that music should be fun, no matter the path the student want to follow. And it is my responsibility to find a way to inspire my students.

METHODS USED

I believe the methodology shifts depending on the student. I do have a sets of Guitar exercises and a simple method to explain theory that helps students from all levels.   I always combine the technical exercises and theory, with some song that's appropriate for the student level. I always to choose something that the student likes to hear. It truly helps, especially students that are beginners, to feel motivated.  The focus is always to make it fun for those that are starting, so they can find their passion for it. And for the advanced students, the goal is to help them to reach their maximum potential.

LESSON STYLE
My teaching approach is simple. My goal is to help you succeed and become the best musicians you can be. I strongly believe that greater passion for your craft leads to more discipline. I will work to motivate and support you in discovering your love for music. I focus on music theory, technique, and musicianship. For more advanced students, we can work on composition and production. We will work on learning Scales, Chords, rhythm, and proper technique. And of course, this is all in service to find the student’s passion and to make it as fun as possible!
