Hi, I'm Quentin. I started playing drums at age twelve and my love for music has grown ever since. I live in Los Angeles (SFV) and perform regularly as a church drummer. I am versatile in many styles and love to teach interested students.
I attended Pomona College where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music while playing in their jazz band and emceeing around campus. Afterwhich, I studied with Cuban drum master Jimmy Branly at Shepherd University while completing my Master of Music degree in Drums/Percussion.
Teaching music is more than an income to me. Drumming has opened doors in my life I never imagined. Understanding music has pushed my drumming further away from being merely a mechanical exercise to full transcendental experience. Playing music from the heart with the know-how to conceptualize and quantify it lends itself to limitless potential for improvement, enjoyment, and sustained participation in music. Sharing the joy of music with the next generation of musicians is what motivates me. Serving as a tool for the empowerment, encouragement, development, and flourishing of student musicians is my goal.
I utilize customized lesson material to offer each student the optimized learning opportunity. As a student with me you will count and subdivide music while playing and reading drum notation starting slowly and increasing speed gradually. The attacks will be demarcated in the following manner (For ex. first, snare and bass drum together, then snare by itself, etc.).
For in person lessons a metronome and/or recorded music will be used to practice syncing with others. * Copies of lesson material available at no additional fee
I don’t push students to practice. People learn from repeated exposure to music over time. I am a first-generation musician and partially self-taught. I see myself as providing information and guidance about where drums and music intersect. The lessons to be learned from the exploration are up to the individual. I focus more on applying musical concepts than learning songs to equip each student to not only master popular repertoire but improvise and reimagine familiar tunes. It is my hope to aid in the fostering in each student of a love for music that lives on in their children.
