B.A. Kalamazoo College, Music
Studied beginner and intermmediate Piano Pedagogy with Christie Chiles Twillie at PLIYH.
Overview:
Called a "creative soul" by the CBS Evening News, Pierre first began composition shortly after teaching himself to play the piano at the age of 16. Under full scholarship to Kalamazoo College, he attained his bachelors degree in music and chemistry and his senior thesis, an interdisciplinary work on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, received the highest honors the institution conferred. He studied composition under Elizabeth Start and Keith Murphy and participated in master classes by composer C. Curtis-Smith. Following graduation, Mr. Miller also studied piano under Steven Hesla at University of Montana and in master classes he has also worked with such diverse musicians as Alon Goldstein, Karen Walwyn, Kuang-Hau Huang, David Schrader, as well as Gilmore Concert Artists Pierre Laurent-Aimard, Angela Hewitt and Orli Shaham.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching music since 2000, and piano and composition full time since 2008.
METHODS USED
John Thompson, Bastien, John Schaum, Theodore Presser, my compositions as necessary, and individual pieces selected for the student from the standard repertoire.
LESSON STYLE
I believe every student is different, so I like to use several approaches:
When the student already knows how to play the instrument, I try to get to know what the student likes at an emotional level, and if the student is willing and open minded (!), I use my vast knowledge of repertoire to enrich the student in places where they might not ordinarily look.
If the student has never played an instrument before, I like to start by teaching the reading of rhythm then progressing to the reading of pitches before jumping right into the performance of pieces. This stepwise process gives the student and I an opportunity to get to know each other in a situation where the pressure is reduced; This gives us an opportunity to learn without having everything complicated by learning pitch, rhythm, reading technique, and piano playing technique all at once.
