Overview:
I recently studied Piano Performance at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, NY with international acclaimed pianist Young-Ah Tak. Currently, I am taking private lessons with Mark Evans, Piano Professor of Schenectady Community College in order to prepare for piano competitions in the summer and fall 2020. Prior to my music education in the US, I studied Piano Performance at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory in Vietnam. I am passionate about performing as well as educating music, and it is such an incredible joy for me to see people of all ages love music and be able to play an instrument. My goal is to help those who want to go further with their skills on the piano, as well as preparing for serious music education in the future.
EXPERIENCE
I was exposed to teaching experience when I took Piano Pedagogy course at the Crane School of Music. I always encourage my students to have persistent and effective practice schedules, and they will seriously benefit from them as the students will advance and develop passions for the music and their instruments. It requires great patience from both the student and the teacher as there will be challenges during lessons and practice sessions. As a student, my teacher has been very patient with me when I had trouble with a particular technique or a difficult passage in a piece that took me quite a long time to get through. On the other hand, as a performer, I also have to be patient with myself while I practice and I also need to discipline myself in order to improve. Therefore, it is my task to make sure that my students get the most out of every lesson and that they can apply what they learn from each lesson to their own practice sessions.
METHODS USED
I will introduce solo repertoire approriate for each of my student's level (intermediate to advanced). I also would like to include music theory and aural skills as the student progress in each lesson. Those areas will enhance students' understading of music even further, as music theory will give students knowledge of the structure of a piece of music and how it was put together, therefore help students learn the music faster and more efficient. On the other hand, aural skills will help students develop their listening skills; they will be able to write down music that is played to them without looking at the music, just like taking dication, but instead of words, musical notes will be played. Ultimately, as a teacher, I ensure my students will be satisfied with their progresses.
LESSON STYLE
It is crucial for each student to progress at his or her own pace. And as a teacher it is my duty to set goals for my students at each lesson and also their own practice sessions. Finding out what really insipres each student has always been my struggle. In the past, I had used the same method for different students, and it turned out that the method would work well with this particular student, but not so much for the other student. Hence I really had to pay great attention to each student's potentials, as well as their weaknesses, then I could successfully design my lesson plan according to each student's ability.
