Hello! I am a multi-faceted percussion musician currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in percussion performance at the University of South Carolina. I am also an alumnus of the University of Iowa, where I graduated with a BM in percussion performance in 2018. I have a diverse range of experiences in the percussion idiom; these include an extensive background in the marching arts with WGI ensemble Cavaliers Indoor Percussion, orchestral and chamber music, jazz vibraphone, steel pan, afro cuban percussion, and drum set.
I began teaching percussion privately during my senior year of high school, and have been teaching in various different capacities ever since. My private studio has historically been composed of high school students seeking advanced instruction in rudimental snare drumming, beginning band students, and beginning drum set students. I've instructed for numerous marching bands in the Chicago and Eastern Iowa area including 2018 Illinois State University Marching Champions and 2019 Tournament of Roses participant Lincoln-Way Marching Band. Part of my duties at the University of South Carolina include teaching applied lessons to freshman students and instructing the Palmetto Pans steel band.
For early high school students and younger, I try to make sure students has a well developed baseline established from which they can build on as their musical interests develop further. For beginning band students, this means cultivating first basic stick control and rhythmic recognition on the snare drum in tandem with note reading, scales, and basic music theory on keyboard percussion instruments. Beginning drum set studies will focus on basic coordination, time, hand development, and stylistic recognition. Curriculum for students 16 or older will normally be more student driven; I hope to help them realize their individual goals and give them the tools to develop and refine a unique voice in whatever medium they choose to study, whether that be concert percussion, mallet literature, drum set, steel pan, or jazz.
My primary concern as a teacher is that each student have a fulfilling experience during their time spent studying with me. Every student has a different path that they're walking on their musical journey and learn in different ways, therefore I strive to tailor my methods and curriculum to each individual student. Goals vary widely student to student, whether you're a motivated band student looking to move up in drum line or make All-State, an aspiring professional, or are taking up the drums as a hobby, I feel I have something to offer in helping you achieve greater musical fluency and increasing your capacity for self-expression through your instrument.
