Overview:
Hi! My name is Nick and I am eager to work with students of all ages and abilities. I have extensive background in opera, musical theater, choir, and church music, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you as you embark on the journey of discovering your voice! I have a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance from Pacific Lutheran University, and I am a current graduate student at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. While my personal focus is on operatic/classical singing, I am open to working with any and all styles of singing. I believe that every voice has the potential to offer something special to the world of music, and I want to help you learn what that special something is. As singers, it is important to be gentle and patient with ourselves and our instruments as we work to improve our technique. The goal is to make music and have a good time doing it, and that is what I seek to do when we work together. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me so we can chat. I look forward to working with you!
EXPERIENCE
Being a student, I have experience from courses I took as part of my degree as preparation for teaching. In these courses, we were taught the fundamentals of the voice on a physiological level, and then had various discussions on how we, as teachers, can translate that to a potential student in a lesson. Part of the requirement for this course was doing field-work, so we all had the opportunity to practice our teaching skills. My goal is to work with students and make singing as fun and easy as possible, while still applying effective technique to make a beautiful sound. I believe it is very important for students to sing every day and to study their musical scores as often as possible, as it is difficult to sing well when the notes aren't learned! To me, however, it is important to only give a student enough to handle... Being patient with yourself is key to making progress. Singing is a long and wonderful journey!
METHODS USED
For all students initially, I like to have them bring me the repertoire they want to sing. Because I believe that healthy singing comes from the heart, I want my students to sing the music that brings them joy. While there is place for assigned repertoire at a certain point in time, it's important for a student to approach singing with the healthiest mindset possible. In the first few lessons, I may not even touch repertoire if I feel that the student needs more work on easing up their instrument and discovering the sensations that work the best for them. Since singing relies so much on internal sensations, my job as the teacher is to guide my students as they ultimately forge their own paths. Since every voice is unique, I avoid formulating my own "cookie-cutter" technique. I want to study each voice and determine the approach that I deem necessary for their vocal development.
LESSON STYLE
It is an incredible moment when a student has that first "aha!" moment, and they realize that they DID have the ability in them to sing, all along! This kind of moment requires that a student be patient with theirself. Singing is an exciting, fulfilling journey, but it is also a long one. Our voices aren't just located in our throats, but they're our entire bodies. In order to sing well, we have to learn how to coordinate our entire body to work against as much negative tension as possible, and that takes work! So, when I work with a student, I am looking for the negative tensions. From there, the student and I work together to figure out how they can balance out that negative tension with a positive one. This takes time, but it is well worth the wait!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
