Bachelor Degree: Winthrop University
I am a native of North Carolina and have been raised in the Carolina's all my life. I show my love for music through teaching. I teach all ages, both older and younger and I teach from my private studio located in Columbia, SC, less than 30 minutes away from downtown Columbia. I am a classically trained pianist with a Performance Degree in Piano from Winthrop University. I have been teaching the residents of South Carolina for the past 5 years and I look forward to showing my passion for music through my teaching.
I have experience teaching since my Junior year of college when I began teaching at the Academy of Music at Winthrop University. I have had many wonderful experiences teaching young children, young adults, and those who have retired from the workforce. I enjoy the challenges that are represented in teaching all different ages as well as enjoying each student's individual personality and character. I find that teaching from a private studio makes the student feel more at ease with a homier environment in which to learn and is why my space is so effective to teach from.
My methods mostly come from the Faber series for the Beginner to the Advanced levels. Their books are thorough and detailed while still containing playful characters and illustrations to keep the young minds entertained. For the intermediate to advanced students their characters and illustrations reflect the more mature status of the student and focus more on the emotive qualities of the music instead of the character and pictures. My methods change for each student that comes through my door as each student will not learn the same as the one before him/her.
My teaching style includes encouraging right habits and/or practice techniques while breaking bad habits from day 1. It is helpful to offer positive critique and praise at all moments of the lesson. I want students to feel excited for their next lesson and not to dread having to come back to learn. By keeping my lesson light and joyful, yet focused on the instrument and the music I create a fun environment in which the student feels positivity and encouragement to be their best self and to be ready to learn at all moments of the lesson.
