My musical background began during my childhood South Africa with a very European-style approach to learning classical piano. Later, after emigrating to the U.S., I majored in music with a concentration on performance and music history. I have always been intrigued by the complicated development of classical music in Europe with a special interest in the music of Beethoven. Later, I returned to college in order to become certified in music education - in great part because I believe in bringing music to classrooms where students might otherwise not have any direct connection with music.
My teaching experience began with many years as a music specialist teaching in K-6 classroom settings where the joy and privilege of bringing a well-planned lesson to 25+ students and watching the spirit of music unite them as a group in singing and playing instruments is its own reward - and a highly magical one! I then decided to embark on a cultural adventure and secured a position teching EFL in South Korea. Much to my great and pleasant surprise, Korean students just love to sing and they were nothing short of completely motivated to participate in choral programs I was able to set up to support their English learning. Currently, I still teach as a music substitute in area school systems and I have taught piano for over three years.
My overall philosophy of teaching music is that it should be a life-long learning experience for both teacher and student and that, like anything that lasts, it should be built on a firm foundation. My goal in teaching piano is music literacy which, in turn, brings musical independence, and I begin with a structured approach to learning the necessary skils, reinforced by daily practice. The educational outcome I am looking for is to see my students successfully decode a page of notation at their appropriate level and then be able to translate that notation into sounds on the keyboard. I truly love the sense of satisfaction I see my students enjoying after they have mastered skills and feel that they are "catching on". The book series I use and with which I have seen positive results is Faber & Faber, Piano Adventures.
I am not finished this yet. Will finish soon.
