I'm a very enthusiastic and passionate instructor who truly loves sharing the joy and enrichment music brings to peoples lives. I've been studying the guitar since I was 13 years old with 10 years of formal training culminating in 2 semesters with Marc Manino at the State College of Florida. I've been playing professionally as a guitarist since I graduated from college. Along the way I picked up the fundamentals of a few other stringed instruments specifically the banjo, mandolin and ukelele. I've performed locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and have shared the stage with luminaries such as Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Duane Betts (Dawes) and Jimmie Fadden (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) to name a few!
My teaching experience started 10 years ago as a traveling instructor, visiting students in their homes. From 2011 to 2016 I facilitated the lessons program at Guitar Center Sarasota and have a wealth of knowledge teaching students of all ages. Practice makes perfect! I encourage beginner students, young and old, to maintain a consistent practice schedule. This helps the student show progress and fosters a real passion for the instrument. Ultimately, learning the guitar or any instrument is all about fun. If the student's not enjoying it then I'm failing them as a teacher. I advocate that my students embrace every facet of learning the guitar so they can feel good about their accomplishments and in turn, stay motivated to learn.
The pedagogy of learning the guitar is standard for beginner students. Guitar method books published by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay or Alfred Music all offer virtually identical "how to" instruction for students young or old. Their subtle differences include font size and pictures and eventually select performances pieces. It's a fact thats convenient to both teacher and student because it makes learning the fundamentals easy. For younger students, once they've grasped the fundamentals, I introduce appropriate performance pieces as a goal to progress to another level of know how. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and tailor my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun regardless of their level of ability.
