Master of Music in Music Performance (Piano) Boise State University, Boise, ID 2014-2017 Bachelor of Arts in Piano, cum laude Brigham Young University-Idaho, Rexburg, ID 2010-2014
I am an accomplished concert pianist, composer, and writer currently based in Boise, Idaho. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano from Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2014, under the private instruction of Dr. Stephen R. Allen. I have also had an extensive study of the French language and served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City (Spanish-speaking).
Immediately after finishing my undergraduate studies, I attended Boise State University and earned my Masters of Music degree in Piano Performance in May 2017. I studied piano performance and pedagogy with acclaimed Steinway Artists such as Mark Neiwirth, Dr. Del Parkinson, and Dr. Mark Hansen. I teach piano privately, accompany vocalists and instrumentalists, and I also actively compose my original piano music.
When I gave my first professional piano lessons in 2011, I knew that teaching will be something that makes me want to get up in the morning. During the last seven years, I have squeezed teaching piano lessons in between my undergraduate and graduate studies. Currently, I am teaching piano part-time alongside with my full-time job. I have taught students of all ages, levels, and musical backgrounds. One of the things I focus on is teaching a student according to their learning modality and helping them understand how they can learn faster and smarter. One of the most rewarding things about teaching is seeing the beaming eyes of your students when they have learned something new and feel accomplished about themselves.
I diligently create lesson plans for each student to ensure that we do not go over the same things over and over and to help a more sequential learning. I use several piano method books for beginner and intermediate students, depending on their previous piano lessons and specific needs. For younger students, I use either Faber’s Piano Adventures or Snell and Hidy’s Piano Town. For an older beginner or intermediate students, I typically would start with John Thompson method books.
For adult beginners, I use the Faber accelerated beginner method books. Once I see that the student is ready for a repertoire, I start introducing a piece that they could work on and possibly perform. For advanced students, typically I would start with the current piece(s) they’re working on and once I get a hang of their level, I may choose to assign a piece that will help them propel their musicianship.
When I accept a new student in my studio, I ask them what their goals are in piano lessons and what they want to get out of it. It is my lifelong mission to set my students up for success and I tailor my lesson plans according to their goals and their musical progress. I pay close attention to their primary learning styles and helping them utilise this to their advantage. I also set a learning environment where students feel safe and comfortable to ask questions, speak about their struggles, and receive constructive feedback. Most importantly, I want my students to feel that I sincerely care about them and that I am not just a teacher, but also a friend.
