I have been playing the violin for almost 20 years, it is a passion of mine to perform but even more so to teach! I love inspiring people to open themselves up to the world of music, especially classical music, though I can teach other styles. I was selected to perform All County and All State and later went on to expand my knowledge at Columbia University. I worked closely with students to refine their skills as well as develop proper technique to make learning and playing violin fun and exciting.
I have been teaching violin for 10 years. For children especially, I try and make learning violin fun and exciting, while also valuing consistent practice time and commitment to the learning process (depending on skill level/age). I try to foster time management skills for kids to develop and take with them in the future. I work through proven teaching methods I have expanded upon on my own as well as renown books my students can purchase to follow along with and gain an even deeper understanding of the material.
Depending upon whether a student knows how to read music, I curate my instruction books with this knowledge. I will either use Essential Elements for Strings by Michael Allen or The Violin Fun Book by Larry E Newman. For adults, I will use Play The Violin Today by Kaitlyn Hahn. I am very concerned with technique and posture, as well as a mastery of reading music, these things are paramount to learning the violin! I believe that too often children are trained to play violin by ear, I like to focus on understanding the reasons behind how the music was written to give a better comprehension of the material.
I try to develop short and long term goals with each of my students and/or their parents. I think it is very important to couple your knowledge of the instrument with a realistic trajectory of goals for the student so that they have something to focus on each lesson. I give short exercises as homework to refine the skills we learned during our lesson to be practiced for the week. Basically, I try to tailor my teaching method based on what I believe will work best for the student after I get to know them. I focus a lot on scales, key signatures and rhythm as these are the basis of all instruments and music!
