Currently in school for music education at Gardner-Webb University
I have been passionate for music since I was a sophomore In high school. I started teaching when I got into college. I am currently at Gardner-Webb University majoring in music education with my concentration in trombone. I also play drums, piano, euphonium, and tuba. I play piano at Mont Nebo Baptist Church. I have been playing there for about four years now. I have also played drums there before. With drums and piano, I am better at teaching gospel songs. With trombone, tuba, and euphonium I teach classical, jazz, and marching band. I have been a part of marching band for five years and this will be my fourth year teaching it. I have been teaching for about four to five years.
I pretty much said most of it in my bio, but I have been teaching since I was a senior in high school. When I was a freshman in college I started teaching marching band for Gaffney high school for a few months. Then the next year I went to Greer High School and started teaching there. In my years of working at Greer I have also been teaching at there middle school, giving master classes with brass and percussion. At the moment I spend most of my time improving my playing until marching band season comes back around.
For beginners I would have many different types of books that we can look on. But if you are currently in a class at your school then we would use whatever book your teacher is using. When it comes to piano and drums I would give you something to play and see if where we would be in terms of what things you already know how to do and where I should start teaching. With marching band it depends on if you have a certain part of matching band that you want to work on. But I would start with posture and marching technique.
How I work when it comes to my teaching is I first try and see where and how you react when it come to me teaching you. The one thing that is not going to happen is you are not going to get the techniques or teachings that I teach you in one lesson. You have to at least work on it on your own. But at the same time, if you have any questions while you are practicing you can always call me and I will help you with any way I can. I try to keep our lessons scheduled so that we wouldn’t be figuring out what else to talk about. I am also a child at heart so I like to play games here and there that can improve yourself as a musician so that it wouldn’t be too boring.
