I have been teaching at my familys music shop and other places for 13 years including schools, businesses, and summer camps.
For the most part I like older music like blues, jazz, rock etc etc, but not really into a lot of the newer electronic dj music that seems to be popular now. My father being a blues musician had an impact on how i started guitar, but it wasn't long before I kind of went my own way. I got Obsessed with Metal and bands like Metallica, Slipknot, Lamb of God but slowly as I got older went through almost every genre there is. I went from Metal, to Rock, to Punk, to ska, to reggae, and now I'm in a mixture of Blues/Reggae/Jazz/Rock with a main focus on Blues.
I started playing guitar and singing at 5 years old, my grandfather was a jazz sax player, my dad is a blues musician. My dad owned his own music shop for 23 years where we taught lessons for all types of instruments where I learned how to set up, tear down and even repair instruments and equipment. During my years of playing I have gone through multiple music fazes allowing me to have a general understanding of all types of genres. I was also in band in high school where I learned multiple percussion instruments which helped with playing drums and other percussion instruments for gigs and recording.
I was taught with Mel Bay books and prefer to teach out of them although it all depends on what the student wants. Usually we're in the book for beginners and we stay in the book until the students shows improvement. I usually wait to get to a point where a student has a good grasp on reading playing and I thats where we will start working on a set list. Building a list of songs that they choose and learning them start to finish so they can then start playing in front of crowds. For online lessons I basically help with what the student wants to accomplish for that lesson, if they continue to take lessons we then start to work on songs, scales, chords, and soloing. My end goal is getting them out playing in front of people like family, friends, recitals, talent shows, open mics, etc.
I'm pretty passionate but also understand that not everyone picks it up the same way. Easier for some, impossible for others, and knowing that I try to be as patient as I can when my students get frustrated because trust me, everyone does. For lessons in person I wont hesitate to let my student know if I'm not happy with their behavior or progress, like students who misbehave, don't listen, yell and runaround, we are here to learn guitar. For online lessons like I said it all depends on what the student would like to get accomplished for that lesson, so be happy, take your time, ASK QUESTIONS, and we'll have a good lesson!
