Overview:
I have always loved music and when I was still in elementary school I was given a pair of conga drums after being inspired during a family vacation. Over ten years later I am listening and playing more styles of music on more instruments than I ever thought imaginable when I began. I achieved a Music Education Degree from Montclair State University where the world's musical doors burst open for me. It became more and more clear that I wanted to share the joy of musical expression through both education and performance.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for five years and how I teach is definitely influenced by experiences. I have had the opportunity to study with musicians in all occupations and styles. This is why I am so grateful to be able to find what inspires each student of mine and help them grow in whatever style gets them playing.
METHODS USED
I provide students with some essential books that should be held onto for as long as they are playing. All of my students study some classical snare drum. This is because the techniques used on snare can transfer to every other percussive instrument. It also is a good warmup and sets us up nicely to continue the lesson on whatever the student's focus is While covering fundamentals I like to mix in solos and etudes that utilize whatever techniques we may be covering. So that the student will be better prepared to perform repetoire as soon as they are ready. I believe it is important to find what inspires students as well as broaden their horizons. Sometimes we have never heard of something that speaks to us I always ask students what they enjoy listening to and playing. By using a students interests to inspire them, it can only help propel their progress. I will also bring new and unfamiliar musical experiences to my students as well because who know what may also inspire.
LESSON STYLE
Everyone who picks up an instrument is not going to tour the world as a musician. While this is true, every student can play and be proud. It is my job to help students progress and reach that level. I like to keep lessons light in attitude, but still put responsibility on my students. Work outside of lessons is a must for progress, even if only ten minutes is all that is possible. One of my goals is to show students how to reflect on whatever work they are doing and tell for themselves whether it is good work or not. Accountability is one fact of life that hopefully all of my students will be proud of having.
