Overview:
I am an educator and composer who loves working with kids. I graduated from LIU Post (formerly C.W. Post) in 2014 with my Bachelor's in Music Education. At Post, I specialized on the trumpet with french horn as a secondary. I began teaching privately during my senior year of high school. Since then, I have taught 5th grade band, 6th grade band, 7th & 8th grade band, 9th grade band, and grades 9-12 high school band. In addition to trumpet, I teach french horn, clarinet, piano, and trombone privately.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching trumpet privately during my senior year of high school after I decided that I wanted to be a music teacher. Since then, I've taught students privately from as young as six to as young as sixty on the french horn, clarinet, alto saxophone, and piano. I have also taught students with special needs and motor disabilities. I really do believe that I have made a positive impact on all of my students. I think it's just as important to have a great time as it is to experience a music education. I do encourage my students to participate in NYSSMA festivals and other solo festivals. It's an amazing opportunity and experience!
METHODS USED
For beginning band/instrumental students, I normally begin with the Accent on Achievement Method Book 1. There are many similar books, but I enjoy this one because it's colorful and it isn't something that's intimidating for the kids to look at. Some books can look overwhelming for kids who are just beginning. For beginning piano students, I typically start with John W. Schuam's Piano Course: Pre-A (AKA "The Green Book) and John Thompson's "Note Speller" (AKA "The Red Book"). I do ask for all of my students to have a small manuscript book as well for notes and other exercises. All of these items are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased on Amazon or at any local music shop/retailer.
LESSON STYLE
I think it's awesome to see a student's progress over the weeks, months, and years. One thing I think it's important to realize is that everyone makes mistakes. Students sometimes feel if they make a mistake or "sound bad," that means they're doing a bad job. I really feel I do a great job at making sure students feel comfortable with making mistakes and learning from them. Everyone learns at their own pace!
