ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
DMA Percussion Performance, University of Washington, In Progress MM Percussion Performance, University at Buffalo, 2012 BM Music Education, The Hartt School of Music, 2008
Overview:
Melanie is an active performer and educator in the Pacific Northwest. As a classically trained percussionist, she believes that a true educator must remain active in performance and growth to be the best possible. She has performed with a variety of large and chamber ensembles, notably: Talujon Percussion Quartet at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, Slee Sinfonietta, the Southern Tier Symphony, and the UB Percussion Ensemble at the June in Buffalo Festival. While at the Hartt School, she toured with the Wind Ensemble and performed in the CBDNA conference, and the 2007 MENC conference with the Orchestra and Chamber Choir as a guest percussionist. Throughout her degrees, she has performed five solo recitals and has commissioned a number of new works for percussion, including a concerto, percussion quartet, trio, and two solo works. Melanie has also had the opportunity to perform in nine musicals as a pit musician, ranging from black box theater to mainstage productions.
EXPERIENCE
While studying primarily with Ben Toth and Tom Kolor, she has worked with a number of other teachers specializing in different areas. This has given her a diverse knowledge in world music knowledge and playing abilities. Notable teachers include Joe Galiota (African drumming), Shane Shanahan (Middle Eastern hand drums), Rogerio Boccato (Brazilian hand drums and samba), and Dave Samuels (Caribbean Jazz). Secondary classical percussion instruction was provided by Al Lepak (timpani), John Bacon (drum set), and Michael Burritt (marimba).Though primarily a percussionist, Melanie is also an active violinist and vocalist. She held the principal second violin position with the UB Symphony Orchestra and frequently performs in small ad hoc ensembles for weddings and parties. She sang in two contemporary a cappella groups: her collegiate group Vocal Explosion! and the Hartford Wailers, a CASA League group based in Hartford, CT. She also was a member of the Hartt Chorale for 3 years.
