I grew up in home where all forms of music, especially classical, were appreciated. When I was young, I started out as a violinist and quickly fell in love with performing in an orchestra. I continued my music education by adding flute and French horn to repertoire. Over the years, I picked up numerous other instruments. I spent most of my youth traveling across the state for opportunities to perform in symphony orchestras. I went on to study flute at Albion College where I held a full solo recital, competed and won my college's Concerto Competition, and was a regular soloist with the symphony orchestra on campus. Since college, I have been freelancing, teaching lessons off and on, and sharing my talent on the streets of Downtown Holland as a street performer. I am very passionate about music and enjoy every opportunity given to me to perform.
I began teaching in high school off and on and gave lessons in a wide variety of instruments. Nowadays, I have been teaching off and on and have limited myself and my time to only teaching flute. I actually discovered my love of teaching actually through the equine world. In addition to being a musician, I also am an active competitor in dressage.
For beginning students, I use Hal Leanord's Essential Elements. They are very clear and helpful when learning the fingerings and they give students an opportunity in the early stages of their learning to play well known classical pieces at their level. Beginning students will also learn major scales. For intermediate and advanced students I use studies from Marcel Moyse, Taffanel and Gaubert, Trevor Wye, Jeanine Baxtresser, Andersen, Boehm, and so on. Weekly lesson intineray will include all scales through the full range of the instrument, etudes, technical studies, solo repertoire, and ensemble work. Each student will also have time dedicated in their flute lessons for music theory.
My teaching style tends to cater to each student. I understand that not everyone learns the same and that their education needs to be adjusted according to the learning style. I like to have a fun time with my students by teaching them value of giving a great performance and developing their own passion for music. The main goal for me as a teacher, is for my students to want to go home and practice and to be excited about every performance they give. In addition to their instrument studies, I also spend time in each lesson playing recordings for my students and offering opportunities to attend concerts and music events to further their knowledge.
