ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Master Degree: The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary , Bachelor Degree: Welch College

Overview:

Hello. My name is Matthew P. I have been in love with music since I can remember. I started playing the piano at the age of four and still love playing thirty-plus years later. I have a passion for helping others fall in love with music by understanding how it works and learning to interact with it themselves. I have been a church accompanist both as paid staff and on a volunteer level. I have a grasp of many different genres and would love to help you in your musical journey. I love music and I love helping others learn to love music too.

EXPERIENCE

I have played the piano for over thirty years, and picked up the saxophone in middle school (almost twenty-five years ago). I was a band-nerd through high school and went on to get my undergraduate degree in music from a vibrant musical school in Nashville, Tennessee. I have played in churches, for theater productions, for weddings, funerals, receptions, parties... you name it. I bring many genres and styles to the table and can help you understand how each one works to adapt for any opportunity.

METHODS USED

I love technical music theory and think that it is central to understanding music and playing any instrument. I also understand modern musical methods such as lead sheets, the Nashville number system, and rhythm sheets that are the backbone of pop, country, jazz, and modern church music. I can help you understand the basics and build on that to create a deep knowledge of music and how it works with your tastes and opportunities. Your starting point will depend on your experience ad level of skill. We will first determine that starting point and make a plan from there.

LESSON STYLE

I can accomodate different styles of learning, from technical textbook-style lessons, to a looser, ear-based approach. At the base of my teaching style are the fundamentals of music, which create the foundation for all the other types of skills you may want to learn. I enjoy starting with the basics for beginners, making sure we begin with some foundational theory. But we may choose a different starting point depending on your experience and skill level. My teaching style will vary based on your experience and your goals. I look forward to charting that course with you.
