AA, Fullerton College, Music Perfomance
I'm a well round and passionate instructor who enjoys working with students and sharing the experiences I've had as a musician. In 2008, I graduated from Fullerton College with a degree in Music Performance. For the past 10 years I've been performing with bands of all types of genres from Country to Rock to Reggae and even Big Band era Swing. Performing in several bands around LA and Orange County has given me the opportunity to play on the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego and at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. I've also traveled to Las Vegas, Santa Rosa and Catalina Island to perform at several corporate events and festivals.
I began teaching music lessons when I was in college where I got my first job teaching private students. For the past 10 years I've been teaching at Music Academies in Orange County as well as traveling to do in home lessons with students. I emphasis a lot of listening and playing along with recordings and musical performances. In my experience, some of the most valuable lessons in music have come from listening to and emulating the musicians that have inspired me to play and I encourage my students to do the same.
For beginning students I start by showing them the open strings on the guitar or bass and give them exercises to navigate the pick or their fingers through the the strings. Once the student understands the open strings I'll begin showing them single note lines starting with the low strings and working up to the higher strings. For this I'll use examples from simple rock and pop songs. Once the student begins understanding the fret board, I will introduce chords and scale patterns that are essential to playing the guitar along with building a repertoire of songs that the student can perform.
The biggest thrill I get from teaching is seeing one of my students play a song, guitar riff or melody that they couldn't play before. I believe regular practice is important for a musician to improve on their instrument, but it is also important to realize that it takes time and every student learns at a different pace. Though all my lessons are based around the fundamentals of playing music, I tailor each lesson to the individual student's wants and needs. Everybody is unique and it is important to me to see that my students are having fun and are being inspired to create music.
