I'm a knowledgeable, creative, and resourceful music teacher with over twenty years of teaching experience. In 2009, I graduated from The University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies Performance/Minor in Music Theory. With my teaching experience I've taught and performed in all types of settings. I have a background in developing students' interest in appreciating music through teaching them their favorite songs and songs I enjoy by explaining theory, technique, history, and practical skills.
My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons while being a section leader for band, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio ever since. I tell all my students, "A little a day goes a longs way," to remind them the benefits of keeping up with consistency with their craft to see results in their progress. Incorporating technique, tunes, and theory into my students lessons is how I help them gain an excellent balance of understanding everything that comes to music.
For all my students I like to balance between making our way through a method book and breaking down different songs and exercises. I recommend Hal Leonard's Essential Elements/Method books or Standard of Excellence books for my woodwind/guitar/ukulele students, Piano Adventures by Faber books for my piano students, and Breaking It Down or Alfred's Beginning Drumset Method for my drum students. Once the student has gained an understanding of basic sight-reading, then we can move on to more advanced books that can be focused on a theme or other advanced methods.
I believe the number one rule of playing music is to have fun. Stressing this frequently with my students to remind them to not get frustrated with themselves if they run into any challenges with learning their instrument is a part of my teaching style. One of the many motivational sayings I tell them is, "Nothing in music is hard, it's just unfamiliar." I lean heavily on what they're interested in, if they have any favorite artists or songs and I also balance that with artists and songs that are some of my favorites. Music is a life long journey that anyone can always learn from no matter what your level.
