Overview:
My name is Marissa, and I am a dedicated and passionate musician and teacher! I play the viola and violin, and graduated this past spring of 2017 from Luther College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. This fall I will continue my education at the University of Minnesota for my Masters of Music in Viola Performance. Over the course of my college career, I have had the opportunity to perform as principal endowed violist in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra across the United States, as well as a residency in Vienna, Austria playing in venues like the world famous Konzert Haus.
EXPERIENCE
I have been playing violin and viola for over fifteen years, and over the course of that time I have studied piano and theory as well. My piano background has helped immensely in teaching strings, and I highly recommend piano experience for any musician, though I don't require it. I have been teaching for over three years and have greatly enjoyed sharing my passion with students. A consistent practice schedule and help from parents is essential to the success of any musician, especially young musicians, and I highly encourage this. I teach classical music, and encourage any performance and collaborative opportunities for my students. I'm willing to teach any age and whatever level they're at!
METHODS USED
I use a variety of books for teaching, and prefer to not use just one. It is essential for students to study scales and arpeggios, so a scale book, typically the Flesch Scale book is required. Other books I use are -Suzuki -Solos for Young Violinists/Violists -For Strings (Though I use Suzuki books, I do NOT teach the Suzuki method. I strong emphasize music reading literacy, and this requires the ability to understand by reading, and not by hearing alone). For more advanced students, I assign etudes and appropriate solo repertoire. I will also assign occasional theory worksheets to enhance students understanding about the music they are playing.
LESSON STYLE
I love watching students succeed and learn the viola or violin! This is why we go by the student's pace and work with their ability. I require a notebook or binder for me to record what the student will need to work on for the following lesson, which helps them remember what they're assigned, as well as keeping them accountable about expectations. (And it helps me to remember!) Accomplishments will always be acknowledged, as well as constructive comments about what needs to be improved both technically and musically. I always want my students to be inspired and to love what they do, and I encourage open communication about the student's feelings about their lessons progress.

Ms. Marissa E. could not have come at a better time. My daughter had a bad experience last year with instruction and was ready to give up playing her instrument. After lessons with Marissa, my daughter is once again discovering her love of music and the beauty of the violin!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
