Overview:
I welcome all ages and all types of adventures! I have early education experience, special education experience, undergraduate and graduate college teaching, as well as classroom teaching experience. We will find a teaching style that is tailored specifically to each student's needs. Every person has artistic talents! However, it is up to the teacher to find those talents, and nurture them. While practice helps, practice never makes perfect... it makes permanent. It is up to the teacher to make sure that the student has all the tools to succeed! Let's start our musical journey together!
EXPERIENCE
I have almost thirty years of experience. As a professional musician I perform, compose, and teach. I have extensive chamber and solo international performing experience as well as orchestra performing experience. I have taught young children, special education, adults and have classroom teaching experience as well. The most important principle I have learned is to recognize HOW each student learns. Everyone is talented and capable... my job is to find a way of making the student's talents shine!
METHODS USED
I typically start the students off with open strings and rhythms and we learn the left hand separately so that the start is not overwhelming. With an intermediate to more advanced students we progress to scales (Jhnke, Galamian, Flesh etc...), etudes and exercises (Shradieck, Kayser, Mazas, Kreutzer, Wieniawski, Paganini etc...), as well as performing pieces (this often includes Bach and Mozart in every student's repertoire). I very much encourage all of my students to record themselves a few times a week, perform as much as possible (even for the family pet), play competitions and play with others!
LESSON STYLE
I tailor my lesson plans specifically towards what each student wants and needs. Typically with very young children I will start with larger scale motions as it is difficult for them to place their tiny fingers on the instrument and coordinate. At that point my emphasis is on them having fun and avoiding any bad habits. I generally go through the motions with them so that they feel more confident. I encourage each student/parent to keep a journal of the lessons in order to record the lesson, track their achievements as well as assignments. I welcome anyone who prefers to record electronically. *** I do ask that parents attend the lessons with the children (especially young children). For shy, very busy, or far away individuals I will happily teach ONLINE! :)

Maria is an awesome teacher. She is very patient and encouraging when it comes to the lessons. She is able to understand where you need to improve and helps you to overcome those challenges. She goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need to help you practice by yourself. I definitely recommend taking lessons with her.

It is such a pleasure to have Maria in our home teaching our daughter. She knows just what to say to rein in an excited 8 year old. She finds ways to communicate with my daughter that make sense to her. Maria is a patient, firm, and friendly teacher. Last but not least, when she plays her violin, it's beautiful.
