Overview:
I have been playing piano since I was seven years old, but my interest in music had started when I was only three. I have also been a participant in several piano competitions since middle school, throughout high school, and into college. In 2017, I graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Music degree. I have a strong interest in performance and in analyzing music, but I also strongly believe that teaching others about music and performance is key to developing a better understanding of music altogether. I also have 2 years of experience with singing voice with formal training. I am able to teach voice lessons as well as piano lessons.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching piano in college in 2015, and most of my students were elementary aged students interested in starting piano lessons at an introductory level. I encourage students to practice every week on a consistent schedule, and I believe that every student is capable of developing a passion for the instrument that they play. I find that while classical music can be inspiring for students to listen to, I also want to make sure that my students enjoy their experience in learning how to play piano. I encourage my students to find something in learning piano that makes them feel more confident and see attainable results from practicing and going to lessons. As for voice lessons, I have taught voice since 2019, and I have extensive training in vocal performance through additional private lessons and choral training. Just as in piano, I encourage my students and want to help them to feel more confident in their vocal singing ability.
METHODS USED
For beginner students who are in elementary or middle school, I would typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Library Chord Approach books. After I assess how far a student has progressed through lessons and introductory songs, I may begin to introduce solo repertoire that might be appropriate for the level of skill that the student has demonstrated if the student is looking to play more challenging repertoire. I would strongly recommend that students who are interested in playing repertoire outside of the Chord Approach books let me know that they are interested in learning additional solo repertoire, as I will make sure to guide my instruction to them to help them learn the pieces they are interested in playing. I may also use other books for teaching if necessary. As for voice, I am willing to help students with any genre of music, whether it be classical or modern music. My previous voice students had begun with Concone exercises, but I am willing to work with my students with various other warm-ups, exercises, and vocal pieces.
LESSON STYLE
As a teacher, there is nothing that I would love to see more from my students than a developing passion for music, whether it be for playing piano or singing. However, I understand that every student may have different learning styles and that it is important for students to set realistic expectations for themselves in progressing through their music lessons. I will make sure to acknowledge and help my students recognize their progress throughout their lessons; I believe that every student can be inspired to learn more through positive reinforcement and individually tailored instruction.
