Osceola High School 2004-2008 Kissimmee, FL Currently attending: F.i.r.s.t. Institute Orlando, FL Recording Arts
Overview:
Hi I'm Malik and I am passionate about Music. I play a lot of instruments and I am a entertainer in a lot of different outlets. I have had many opportunities to learn, teach, and/or perform over the country, and I am grateful for the that and the experience I gain still to this day. I have been teaching private lessons and master classes since I was a senior in high school (2007-present). I primarily play drums and sing vocals, which is also what I primarily teach, and I am very certain I will be teaching until I'm fossil fuel. I live in Orlando, a place that breeds a lot talented artists and musicians of all styles, and I want to continue that trend. Hopefully with you!
EXPERIENCE
Since graduating High school, I have been able to perform all over the country as a band, or a solo artist. Most recently I performed with a dance team, where I danced and drummed this past New Years Eve 2016 at Universal Studios Citywalk! Exciting experience and one I will never forget. I have taught at various high schools teaching the percussive programs as well as writing the music for these programs. Osceola High School 2008, St. Cloud High School 2014, to name a couple. I have taught marching percussion and I have taught orchestral percussion in the form of master classes. I have also taught many private lessons with students ranging from ages 4 - 36 years of age. I enjoy teaching at any age or level of talent as long as the student has a fun experience out of it.
METHODS USED
I teach out of a few method books when it comes to percussion. Vocals is more of a discovery process while utilizing some neat exercises to build vocal chord strength. With a drummers they can learn multiple ways to do the same application, while a vocal student only has their one voice to work with. I always teach fundamentals, and will focus a lot on it depending on the students needs, to help them achieve a goal they have set out to achieve. I will teach a student what they want to learn, but I will never cheat them out of the understanding of what they are doing.
LESSON STYLE
With new students taking their 1st lesson, I, with the student, set a realistic long term goal for the year. We then make short term goals to as the steps to take to meet this long term goal. After that I am able to plan my lessons with each student more accurately so that the time per lesson is fully utilized. If their goal is to be a confident pop singer, I will start fundamental singing exercises in regards to a pop style singer. My students tend to have fun, but I also, explain to them the difference between fun and hard work so that no frustrations occur. If learning or practicing music becomes a chore, it begins to lose what is fun about it. I try to avoid that from happening at all costs. "If it isn't fun, you are doing it wrong." -Malik
