ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Course Work: Bradley University

Awards:

Edna B. Nelson Scholarship for Music

Overview:

I believe that all students deserve to have a relationship with music. I am currently a Junior at Bradley University and am studying music education. Since 2009 I have participated in numerous musicals, operas, and ensembles and have had many leadership and teaching roles within these experiences such as directing, choreographing, and teaching music, as well as coordinating schedules and communicating with cast/ensemble members, faculty, and parents. At Bradley, I am taking classical voice lessons as well as piano, saxophone, and composition. I hope to teach my students how to appreciate music as well as use it as an outlet of expression. My lessons focus on technique and singing/playing in a healthy manner.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching group and individual music lessons for 5 years. In high school, I taught voice to grades K-8 as well as directed musicals such as HONK! and Seussical the Musical. Now that I am in college, I have expanded my lessons to teaching voice, piano, ukulele, saxophone, composition, and music theory. I have experience teaching these topics in general music classrooms grades K-12 as well as individual students at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. My goals for my students are to challenge themselves and to help them improve in their musical abilities while having fun and playing repertoire that they enjoy! I let my students make their own goals at the beginning of lessons and then I structure my lessons to help them meet their goals. The most important thing to me is that my students are enjoying themselves while also improving and playing/singing in a healthy and correct manner.

METHODS USED

I focus a lot on the Alexander Technique of body mapping in my lessons and how the body is used to produce sound, breath, resonance, and posture. This will help teach students how to sing and play their instrument comfortably and will help them produce a stronger breath, a tense-free posture, and explore their resonance space as well as their range without straining or injuring their vocal and breath muscles. I apply the Alexander Technique to all ages and it is applied differently depending on the instrument and level the student is playing at. For many of my lessons I supply supplementary materials that match my student's interests, age, and level that they are playing at. I will supply the materials and the student will be expected to keep them in a three-ring binder. I recommend some method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for beginning saxophone and Alfred's Basics for beginning piano.

LESSON STYLE

At the beginning of any lessons, I allow my student to set goals for themselves and together, we come up with a game plan on how we will accomplish those goals. I take time to get to know my students so that they feel confident playing in front of me as well as making mistakes. A general lesson will start with some welcoming conversation and talk about how practicing went throughout the week. We will then warmup (different for all instruments) and review old material. I will then introduce new material and if necessary, provide some music theory to help further the students understanding of musical notation and function. This however is a general outline and most lessons will be tailored to my student's wants and needs. I am willing to accommodate for students and learn new teaching methods that may better their education.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
