I can't wait to play with you!!! I am an experienced teacher who loves to share the joy of music with my students. In addition to traditional lesson materials, I also use online tools such as SmartMusic, Bandlab, Noteflight, and Flat.io with students interested in exploring music technologies. I began my study of music at age 6, with violin lessons at the Eastman School in Rochester, NY. By age 8, I was also studying clarinet and piano. I attended high school in Miami, FL. I had the honor of being awarded first chair in the Florida All-State orchestra for 3 consecutive years. I went back to Rochester, NY where I attended college at the University of Rochester, and continued pursuing my musical studies at Eastman School of Music. I worked for over 20 years as a computer engineer. In 2017, I retired from my engineering job to pursue music full time.
I have extensive experience teaching in private, corporate, community, and school environments. I have taught students from age 6 through 82, and would love to expand that age range further! My favorite experiences teaching are when a student surprises themselves with their progress, and discovers that they can do far more than they ever thought possible in music and in life. I believe that music and the arts are a fundamental part of being human: we all have a creative side, and nurturing that creativity helps us to feel fulfilled.
I use a variety of methods depending on the needs of the student. School age children frequently are already using a lesson book and curriculum as part of their school studies, and sometimes prefer to work out of these materials. Adults and more advanced students often have very particular goals they wish to focus on, and I can help each student select materials for study that will advance that goal. I teach not only the fundamentals of how to play the instrument, but also how to read music and play in ensemble settings.
I work with each student to understand their goals, and based on this, we choose together how much and which material to work on. No matter how lofty or modest your goals, I can help you chart a course to success. I encourage students to use a variety of methods to learn music. Our work together may include movement, listening, writing, singing, composition, and improvisation. Using a variety of methods makes learning more fun, and it also helps us to learn faster and retain more information. Finally, each and every one of us is different in how we learn. I love working with students to find the learning style that best suits each individual. I also offer SmartMusic and/or playalong videos for students, so they can have the experience of playing in a group.
I have studied saxophone with Lisa for several years. She is a fabulous teacher, and has a great way of explaining things!
Lisa is an experienced teacher in so many ways. She is well versed in the mechanics of instruments, and all the nuances of music. She works well with others, and is an excellent teacher!!!
Lisa is an awesome teacher. My daughter and I have both studied with her, and she is able to tailor the teaching to best fit each student's needs. Highly recommended!
I enjoy every single lesson with Lisa. I took 20 years off from playing the clarinet, and Lisa helped me to get going again, and encouraged me to play in the local band. Wonderful teacher!
As an adult alto sax player, I had Lisa as a director/instructor in several small jazz ensembles. She is very encouraging and supportive and gave me a positive push ("a you can do this") in soloing/improvising. Lisa has been a mentor to me as I continue playing the sax and with her encouragement I was successful in performing in jazz band camp for 2 summers!!!
Lisa is an articulate, engaged, patient, knowledgeable, teacher. She gives so much and really wants her students to succeed .
I haven't played my clarinet for many, many years. I was in a school band and as I've gotten older, I regretted not keeping it up. Lisa is a wonderful and patient instructor. She reassured and encouraged me not to let time be a factor in my not trying again. She helped to relieve my anxiety and with calmness and caring, made my picking up the clarinet again, enjoyable, as well as possible. I would highly recommend Lisa to anyone who is considering playing, no matter what age you are.
