Overview:
I am guitar teacher and concert artist. My Master's degree in Guitar Performance was completed last May. During these two years of my studies at Yale University I had an experience of teaching guitar to undergraduate and graduate students. Before that, I have had a number of teaching experiences in music schools and college back in my home country, Armenia. There, I have graduated from Yerevan State Conservatory. I have also received a Graduate Certificate in Guitar Performance from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles). I have performed in concerts, music series and festivals in United States, Europe, Russia and Armenia. As a concert artist, I have always strived to keep my program diverse and my repertoire included compositions from the eras beginning from Renaissance and Baroque to our contemporaries. I have had an experience of performing with different orchestras and chamber music groups.
EXPERIENCE
I have had an experience teaching students of different ages and levels. I have started teaching in the year 2006. I have had teaching experience both in my home country - Armenia and the United States. I was guitar teacher at Yale University school of Music and Yale College, A. Babajanyan Musical Pedagogical College, S. Barkhudarian Music School, Sayat-Nova Music School and "Meet the Instruments Mentor" at USC Thornton Outreach Program.
METHODS USED
During my trips to international guitar festivals I have had opportunities to participate in masterclasses and communicate with major guitar teachers from various parts of the world in person. Thus, I have gathered information and was introduced to the different teaching approaches and was able to see, hear and summarize the degree of efficiency of each approach, trying to extract the most useful and important features from each encounter. In my lessons I usually refer to guitar methods of M. Carcassi, D. Aguado, F. Carulli, F. Sor, S. Tennant, P. Romero, A. Carlevaro. Also, I emphasize the importance of listening to the recordings of masters of the guitar and thus I often assign listening to my students. According to their preferances and technical abilities at the particular moment we choose a repertoire together.
LESSON STYLE
In my opinion the main goal of guitar and music lessons in general is to help the student to find and understand what is his/her unique voice, sound, style and to develop his/her technique accordingly, in order to meet the demands of repertoire they aim to perform. I try never to give the ready answers, but I rather ask questions to the students and encourage them to think actively and find the answers on their own. I tailor my teaching style by taking into consideration the differences in character, physical abilities, strengths and weaknesses of each individual student. If necessary, I may also assign some concerntration improving exercises that are performed without the instrument.
