I have had many opportunities to be exposed to the joys of music in my life. My major emphasis as a student has been piano and my privileged time at Julliard taught me that nothing is impossible. Branching out from strictly classical music, I involved myself in 15 years of musical community theater, performing in major roles, directing, creating costumes, scenery, choreography, and composition. During that time frame I enjoyed helping others get prepared for their own vocal auditions , as well as lending my piano skills to help dancers enhance their skills. Though my background started as one based on discipline and technique, I learned to truly enjoy music as I taught piano to students of all ages, developed a children's choir and taught them how to write music, developed a senior -citizens choir, and of course had wonderful recital events for the families and friends of my students. I am open to doing what it takes for my students to enjoy the beauty and joy of music in their lives. At any ages this is possible...... As I enter my students home we will develop a partnership not just as teacher and student, but also as co-communicators to help you be lifted into a place of accomplishment and joy.
My approach to teaching is very individualized. I need to know why you want to pursue instruction. Is it something you wish you had done as a child? Do you have a particular piece of music that stays in your memory that you want to be able to play. Are you looking to find an outlet for yourself that has nothing to do with your job as an adult, or is their a talented child in your life who could use some direction to grow that talent. I have taught mothers and their daughters, little boys who would rather be playing baseball, seniors who thought their hands couldn't mange the keys, young athletic people inspired to really learn to become accomplished at something outside their comfort zone.. .Though playing the Piano is not a contact sport, when one truly works at it, it will make you sweat.
As I indicated I teach the individual. There are standard rules, exercises and of course a necessity to practice in order to progress. You must have your own piano, or 66 count key board so you can put something into your lesson. You do not 'practice' at your lesson. You will be rewarded with progress and my sincere accolades. You deserve it. Not being able to do something usually usually requires a different approach. that is where my teaching skills come in. That is where we communicate. It is not a contest between you and me. I want you to win the joy and good feeling of your accomplishment.
Your goals become mine. We can have lessons every week, every other week or flex as needed. The important thing is to realize your investment through your effort and that way my effectiveness as your instructor keeps you going. I will give you assignments to meet your enthusiasm and challenge you. Once we have established your level , beginner to advanced - we are on our way. If you did pursue piano years ago and stopped because ........whatever your answer may be......just know that you are starting again, you are a different perhaps more mature person, and so this will be a new experience for you.
