I'm a singer/songwriter originally from Chicago. I now reside in St. Cloud, Minnesota. I've been playing guitar since I was five years old. Several other instruments followed such as 5-string banjo, ukulele, baritone ukulele, bass, and piano. I have produced 10 albums of original music. I started teaching in January 2014 and have made it my full time occupation since then. I started Kyle's Banjo Club in August 2021 and it has grown to nearly 500 members in just over two years. Every month I send out ten new transcriptions, compositions, or arrangements for the banjo for free. I have published over a dozen ebooks of sheet music for guitar, banjo, ukulele, piano, woodwinds, and brass instruments. Since my digital sheet music shop opened in 2021, I have had over 2,000 different customers from all over the world.
I started teaching in the Chicagoland area in January of 2014. I ran afterschool programs everyday of the week with guitar and chess classes. Music took over full time fairly quickly and most of my classes were replaced by private lessons by the end of 2014. I moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota in May 2018. I set up classes and lessons again in St. Cloud, Royalton, Cold Spring, Little Falls, and Upsala during my time here. When the pandemic started in 2020, I already had several online students who continued with me from Chicago. Several more students transferred to online lessons with me and everyone has truly thrived in this learning environment.
For absolute beginners, we usually start with one of the Hal Leonard method books. For piano students, I like the Piano Adventures series. Each instrument has a different number of books in the Hal Leonard series, but we always aim to finish one full book before moving on to other things. For example with banjo, we usually start out with bluegrass and then can venture into other styles such as clawhammer. If you know specifically which style you'd like to start with for any of the instruments that I offer, we can definitely talk about that. Right away, I like to get a list of ten songs that my students would be interested in learning so I can get a better idea of what type of music you like.
I'm very easy going and I always try my best to match the pace and style at which my students learn. My students often tell me that I'm very patient, but to me I don't see any reason why I should rush you when you're trying to learn something new. As I began working one-on-one with students, I developed a real passion for teaching. I enjoy the challenge of customizing each lesson plan to suit the learning styles and needs of each musician I work with. I find music to be an endless source of inspiration and I love helping others understand it on a deeper level.
