ABOUT

Awards:

2010 - Western Michigan University merit scholarship

2012 - College of Fine Arts Faculty Fellowship Grant

Overview:
I am a classically trained violist and string instrument enthusiast, born and raised in the Chicagoland area. I attended and graduated from Western Michigan University with a BM in music performance and have performed worldwide for both classical and early music audiences. During my undergrad, I studied viola with Igor Fedotov at WMU and viola da gamba as a credited independent study with Enid Sutherland at the University of Michigan. My musical tastes however extend much further to R&B, pop, jazz, alternative rock, and countless other genres. I currently work as a freelance musician and teacher in San Diego, CA. I serve as the orchestra director of Double Peak School in San Marcos, CA (grades 3-8) and am the resident violist of the Zene Strings quartet. I also sit principal violist of the San Diego Music Coterie. Professional performance experience includes the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra, The Moscow Ballet, Early Music Michigan, the West Michigan Opera Project and more.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching during my undergraduate program and have since taught in many different settings and for many different strings instruments. As an orchestra director of a grade and middle school, I am responsible for creating an appropriate string curriculum for my students and I am directly responsible for teaching beginning strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass) through Grade 3 difficulty. I maintain both a private studio and work for various studios in the area for all things string instrument related. I find so much joy in teaching various instruments and seeing student's the curiosity and love for music/their instrument grow. My goal is always to create a connection between a student and music, one that will always remain and will be a positive experience to look back on.
METHODS USED
I create my lessons around the goals of each student. I mainly use Suzuki method books, but am willing to work with students if they are already working on one or will assign a different method book for absolute beginners to music. I also incorporate a number of my own scale and etude exercises which are introduced early on, for both children and adults. Depending on the goals of the student, I choose to focus more or less on these. Ultimately I want to focus on what the student wishes to take away from music lessons, and to serve as an encouraging, instructional figure.
LESSON STYLE
As mentioned before, I want to serve as a supportive and instructional figure that helps cultivate an appreciation of music for all students. In order to do this, I believe it's important to prioritize personal student progress rather than subscribe to a fixed game plan. That being said I take on a relaxed adaptive teaching style that tailors to the student. It's my hope that all students feel comfortable working and discussing music topics with me as I believe thoughtful conversations, whether straightforward or abstract, is an essential learning technique.

Miss Kristin is truly a talented, patient, and supportive teacher and musician. She has been teaching my two sons violin lessons for over two years. They have learned so much from her including technique, music theory, and a sincere appreciation for music. She tailors her lessons according to their ability and always demonstrates a positive attitude towards them. Miss Kristin exhibits genuine professionalism and enthusiasm in her field. We highly recommend her!

Kristin is awesome! She is a great teacher. My daughter loves her too because she is 'hip' and relatable. She made my daughter feel comfortable during the first lesson. I would highly recommend Kristin!
