Overview:
I am a classically trained violist and string instrument enthusiast, born and raised in the Chicagoland area. I attended and graduated from Western Michigan University with a BM in music performance and have performed worldwide for both classical and early music audiences. During my undergrad, I studied viola with Igor Fedotov at WMU and viola da gamba as a credited independent study with Enid Sutherland at the University of Michigan. My musical tastes however extend much further to R&B, pop, jazz, alternative rock, and countless other genres. I currently work as a freelance musician and string teacher in north county San Diego. I have taught orchestra at Double Peak School and was the orchestra and band director at Calavera Hills Middle School. I was the resident violist of the San Diego based Zene Strings quartet and sat principal violist of the San Diego Music Coterie. Professional performance experience includes the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra, The Moscow Ballet, Early Music Michigan, the West Michigan Opera Project and more. I have over 20 years of music experience and have been teaching privately since 2015.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching during my undergraduate program and have since taught in many different settings and for many different strings instruments. As an orchestra director of a grade and middle school, I was responsible for creating an appropriate string curriculum for my students and I was directly responsible for teaching beginning strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass) through Grade 3 difficulty. I maintain both a private studio and work for various studios in the area for all things string instrument related. I find so much joy in teaching various instruments and seeing student's the curiosity and love for music/their instrument grow. My goal is always to create a connection between a student and music, one that will always remain and will be a positive experience to look back on.
METHODS USED
I create my lessons around the goals of each student. I mainly use Suzuki method books, but am willing to work with students if they are already working on one or will assign a different method book for absolute beginners to music. I also incorporate a number of my own scale and etude exercises which are introduced early on, for both children and adults. Depending on the goals of the student, I choose to focus more or less on these. Ultimately I want to focus on what the student wishes to take away from music lessons, and to serve as an encouraging, instructional figure.
LESSON STYLE
I want to serve as a supportive and instructional figure that helps cultivate an appreciation of music for all students. In order to do this, I believe it's important to prioritize personal student progress rather than subscribe to a fixed game plan. That being said I take on a relaxed adaptive teaching style that tailors to the student. It's my hope that all students feel comfortable working and discussing music topics with me as I believe thoughtful conversations, whether straightforward or abstract, is an essential learning technique.

Kristin is awesome! She is a great teacher. My daughter loves her too because she is 'hip' and relatable. She made my daughter feel comfortable during the first lesson. I would highly recommend Kristin!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
