I am an extremely passionate music teacher who enjoys helping students of all ages learn or advance on their instrument. I graduated with my bachelor's and master's degree in music from the University of South Dakota and currently teach K-12 general music, instrumental band, and marching band in Parker, SD. As a musician, I have participated in many life changing experiences such as performing in the Thanksgiving Rose Parade in California, performing in the New Year's Day parade in London, and also traveling and singing in beautiful churches across Europe. These experiences have shaped me musically and I hope to bring my culture and expertise into your lessons. I enjoy not only teaching notes and rhythms and the physics of playing an instrument or singing, but also how to use dynamics and nuances to create a musical experience.
My passion for music began in high school when I joined marching band. When I was in ninth grade, after my very first marching band compeititon, I knew I wanted to be a music teacher when I grew up. Since then I have devoted a huge amount of my time furthering my own education so that I may further others' music education. During my time in college, I performed in many ensembles and, as a hobby, I coach and choreograph color guard work (flags and rifles of marching band) for several competing schools in the area. I have been an avid color guard chorographer and director for eight years! As a K-12 music educator, I get the oppourtunity to start beginning band students as well as teach every grade level of band until my students graduate. I encourage outside of lesson practicing and, if comfortable, like my students to perfom in their own recitals or competitions to gain performance experience. I love teaching beginners in any instrument, young or old, and also love working with more intermediate/advanced students on solo repertoire and things like all state auditions.
For beginning students I like to start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements series. There are lesson book volumes 1-3 for each instrument and will teach everything there is to know about beginning an instrument. As we progress, I will then introduce solo repertoire to be prepared for a recital or small performance setting. If a student, young or old, is wanting to play an instrument but also does not know how to read notes or perform other music fundamentals, I can help with that too! I can teach you how to read notes and rhythms and then apply that to your instrument.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching students who develop a passion for music and their instruments. One way to ensure that a students continues to enjoy music is to progress at his or her own pace. My style of teaching does encourage at-home practicing where I will assign a few things to do each week and each lesson we will begin by playing through those assignments. They are realistic assignments and will mostly focus on something that the student has already learned in the previous lesson and I want to ensure they thoroughly understand that specific subject matter before advancing. I can tailor my instruction to all learning styles and paces and will give out supplemental assignemnts or music pieces if I think the students is ready and can handle it. If possible, I also like to play along with my students sometimes, and only for certain things, so they not only learn how to play their instrument, but also have a demonstration of good tone production.
