I am a computer science student at UCSB. I am classically trained under Dr. Jed Galant and am proficient in classical music theory. In my free time I do improvisation playing, practice my favorite classical pieces (Un Sospiro, La Campanella), and try my hand at learning jazz theory. I enjoy listening to modern-day music and creating piano covers for them, writing sheet music for my friends or occasionally posting on my Youtube. Piano will always be a part of my life as I pursue a career in technology, for me to express myself artistically and emotionally.
I began teaching in high school, from word of mouth to my mother's friends, and through out college, remotely. I have been playing for over 10 years, achieved Panel Honors (around 20-40 Advanced Level competitors receive annually), and participated in countless performances. Besides piano tutoring I have also tutored for college level mathematics, coding, and have taught people from ages 8 up to 25. I understand what it means to be a teacher; if the student is misunderstanding something, it is my responsibility to change my approach.
I realize that piano practice is more about the mental than the piano itself, and hope that in learning piano the student can apply this mental growth to other areas of life. I understand how to start with a strong foundation, coming from a background where I didn't have the best teachers and had weak foundations until almost 3-4 years into playing. I will teach at any pace the student/guardian desires, tailoring my approaches to be more rigid and timed for testing purposes, or more interpretive and creative for recreation. In the end I want my student to understand that it is not just about playing the notes correctly; a computer can do that nowadays.
As mentioned before, this depends solely on the goal. If one aspires to achieve a specific MTAC level, there is a certain standard of excellence that must be achieved by a certain date, or you will not pass. I will gently remind the student of the pacing, but ultimately it is up to the student the pace at which they want to improve. There is no secret or trick to piano, but I will guarantee to steer the student in the correct direction of what they want to achieve. I am endlessly patient, and love to see improvement.
