I am a dedicated music instructor who enjoys having the opportunity to share my knowledge with those who wish to reveal their musical potential. Graduating from Carthage College (Kenosha, WI), I majored in both music education and vocal music performance. Since that time, I have served in a variety of settings as an instructor and have been involved on a professional level as a vocal coach and guitarist for pit orchestras. For many years while living in the Chicago area, I had the distinct honor to be invited as an anthem singer for several professional sports teams including the Sting, White Sox, Cubs, and Bulls.
I began teaching privately after graduating from college over forty years ago. My first experiences were teaching guitar and voice in a local music store and I have taught in many other places including student's homes and my own studio. I taught private lessons in voice, piano, bass and guitar and I have worked with all age levels of students from elementary to adults. As a vocal coach my services were often requested by local theatre companies to work with their cast members in developing a role.
It is important to me that we discover together your passion for music and you want this journey to lead us. We will explore all types and styles of music paying particular attention to your interests and what drives you to learn. A consistent practice schedule is crucial to making this all possible and we will work together to develop a system that works for you.
Know that I will never lose sight of the fact that playing music is, and must always be a joyful experience.
It is important to me that I meet you where you are musically and challenge you to realize the potential of who you can be as a musician. I will begin by assessing your current abilities, determine your interests, and developing workable goals for you to achieve. These goals will be constantly reviewed and revised as needed to meet your expectations for studying music.
Instructional materials will be determined individually based on your interests and abilities. Standard printed methods will serve as a foundation and other matierials will be used including any applicable audio-visual resources.
You will also learn about the language of music and how this language translates into the beautiful sounds that captures our emotions and transports us to a higher plain. That which is notated can give us so much information about that which we hear and we will work together on making you proficient in interpreting the markings on paper that become music.
You will not be instructed from a boiler plate plan. Each lessons will be individually developed to keep you interested
As an art form, there is a constant struggle between creating music that is technically "perfect" and music that "speaks to the heart". I believe there is a balance between these two objectives and we will work tirelessly to find that place where you can discover your musical artistry. I am a patient instructor and will never demand perfection from my students. I will always encourage you to do your best and reach your highest potential as a musician.
I believe that we can make this happen - as long as you're willing to put in the time and effort to make it become a reality.
