BA, Monmouth College, Music
I am a very passionate person when it comes to music. I always am up to the challenge of improving my skills in all aspects of music. I enjoy listening to, analyzing, performing, and composing music. In 2010 I graduated from Monmouth College with a BA in Music. I have performed in multiple settings such as marching band, jazz band, concert band, church services, and a rock band. It is my lifetime goal to be a piano instructor full time.
I have been teaching piano for 8 years. I started when I was still in high school and found my love of teaching within the first few months of starting. After high school, I went to college and continued to help fellow classmates improve their piano skills as well as understand theory and aural during group studies. When I graduated I began to make being a piano instructor my life goal, and have enjoyed the journey tremendously so far. I have taught students as young as 5 to 70; I believe it is never too late to learn!
I have yet to find a method book that really suits my teaching style. I believe that one can simply not just learn the piano, there must be a foundation of understanding music as a whole as well. I do use the Piano Adventures method books as a basis of music to practice, but I also add some supplemental materials as well. I take the concepts introduced in the books and give the whole story, not just the bit shown in the book. I do this through my own workbooks that I have created as well as assigning the student some simple research such as writing a short essay on a composer. I find that my students not only have a better appreciation for the piano and the music that they play, but they also gain tons of confidence with the knowledge that they obtain during their lessons.
I have a very adaptable teaching style that can easily be tailored to any student's needs. I have a set of lesson plans that are very loosely followed and dependent on the age of the student, how fast the student learns, and how much the student should be challenged. In the end each student can accomplish the same goal, just in different ways. I am a very patient person, and can find many ways to explain the same thing to one student. I take my lessons seriously, so every minute of the lesson is spent either improving a skill or learning something new.
