ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
BA, University of the Pacific Experience: 12 years of trumpet, where I played in five different ensembles throughout that time. I have played piano for a little while and can teach beginners.
Overview:
I am passionate when it comes to music and I believe it is an essential part of life. Students should have some form of music in there life because of the positive effects it has on the mental state. I have played trumpet for twelve years, during this time I have played in several ensembles such as; ACSI Honor Band, ACSI Honor Orchestra, University of the Pacific Concert Band, U.O.P's Pep Band etc. This has given me the opportunity to play different styles of music! I believe that teaching music is an honorable career because I get to establish and cultivate the love of music in students. Music also creates a safe haven or an outlet to get away from the stresses of life.
EXPERIENCE
I haven't been teaching for a long time, but my love and passion for the trumpet and music in general gives me some if the tools needed to encourage students to do their best. I try to figure out the most effective way a student learns first because all people have different ways of learning, whether it be by sight or by ear. I mainly play classical music, but play popular music as well to change things up. I know practicing can be a pain and learning an instrument can be a struggle, that's why I try to keep things positive and let you know when you are doing things right instead of constantly saying what you are doing wrong and making you feel embarrassed. Students can't grow their skills if they feel that they will be put down every time a lesson rolls around.
METHODS USED
There is a lot more to playing the trumpet than just blowing into the horn. Breathing, embouchure, and tuning are essential elements of playing the trumpet. I will focus on these things at the beginning of the lesson because it affects the sound every time we play. Then, I will use different books depending on the level of the students or we can go over pieces you have from being in an ensemble. Right now I am focused on beginners, but can take in more intermediate players and help them play their band pieces better. Whether it be with the way the piece should sound or supporting yourself in the manner you play.
LESSON STYLE
Today we see a decline in schools' support for music programs and it saddens me to see this! Music has always been an outlet for me, and if students don't have a place to learn music or see a passion for it, they won't have a desire to stick with the learning process of an instrument. This is why I try and make my love for music apparent, so that students can be encouraged to love music and learn as well! I don't want to force students to play things they don't want to because they should love the time in their day where they get to play their instrument. It shouldn't be a hassle where they have to "try and fit time in their schedule" in order to practice.
