1986 Music Education Graduate, Cum Laude, Oakland University
Overview:
I am an enthusiastic and caring teacher who wants to give back to the community as my mentors and teachers gave to me. A love of music and performance from my younger days motivated me to enroll in choir and seek experiences outside of school that would give me the education I sought. My involvement with a show choir and extensive solo work led to a pursuit of studies in jazz and classical literature. I graduated with honors from Oakland University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. I performed in local bands and recorded professionally in the studio after college.
EXPERIENCE
I have 33 years of experience teaching K-12 vocal music students in public school. Working with young people and watching their musical growth has been my greatest reward in this profession. I have taught students in elementary and then, transitioned as their secondary vocal music teacher. It has been a privilege and honor to share my love of music through teaching. I have watched these students “bud and flower” into fabulous human beings who are lifelong musical learners. Over the past several years, I have taught private voice and taught K-8 vocal music in private schools.
METHODS USED
There are a number of methods practice books that I use depending on the age, including Singing Lessons for Little Singers, Level A and Original, by Gregory Blankenbehler and 36 Solos for Young Singers by Joan Frey Boytim. Practice books may be differentiated according to the student’s interests, goals, and genres. Methods practice books are an excellent way to structure lessons, especially for the beginning singer. There are also, many excellent practice books with contemporary, classical, and musical theater pieces that may challenge the teen through adult singer. The book selected for the student needs to be purchased (online, book or music store) to help the student get the most from their lessons.
LESSON STYLE
I believe in teaching at the student's level of learning. As I begin to understand the student's wants, needs, and goals, I can develop lessons that will help him/her improve musical understanding and vocal technique. Learning is a lifelong process, but one must love what he/she is doing to be successful. I encourage this love of music and incorporate lessons on voice care, vocal technique, sight reading, ear training, and music theory that lead to student growth.
