Overview:
Having had the good fortune of studying under the exceptional tutelage of Dr. Wilhelmina Pouget of Chicago, I fully enjoy imparting the keen technique and sublime phrasing Dr. Pouget instilled in me for many years.  It's a great many musical experiences I have known and enjoyed.  While they're rooted in the Classical venue, the departure from there has been both clever and beneficial.  In other words, my classical roots have given strength to other genres without question, making all subsequent studies just a bit deeper, more subtle, intimating that voice has an ancient "home".  Music Composition is a love of mine;  I am emphatically enthused about it, have engaged in writing for many years, and derive a deep feeling when my students enjoy their own compositions as well. I feel, and have been told, that my rapport with students is warm, affable and absorbing enough to compel the student to work hard.  Many of my students have gone on to be music majors and advance as composers and performers in classical music, jazz to the newest electronic and digital renderings of a most innovative kind.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching began at Music Makers of Western Springs, IL, whereupon I started tutoring young students before any graduate pedagogy studies.  I went by an intuitive understanding of that which I knew on the piano, emulating my former teacher's inimitable style.  It turned out that this experience was invaluable and taught me more than I could learn in a didactic setting, as it was experiencial and hands-on.  I applied this understanding in later years, having taught at two notable music conservatories, and at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where I began as a Teaching Specialist for Preparatory students.  The success there was deemed 'exemplary' by the Chair, which advanced me to teaching collegiate students, all of them passing their respective Jury Exams with highest marks.  Many students went on as Music Majors and piano instructors in the field.  At the University and elsewhere, I've implemented multimedia programs involving electronic music, painting and the sysaesthetic arts. These were exhibited in Recitals at both the Tweed Museum of Art at the University, and the Marshall Performing Arts Center with strong reception. I've been told that my rapport with students is a very good and effective one, as I tend to be patient while instilling the importance of discipline.  I set forth this approach in much broader terms in my book, PlayWright! Piano, A Fun and Effective Beginning for the Young Child.  The book encapsulates the nuances I've come to employ under my studies with Dr. Wilhelmina Pouget. I love to work with students of all ages, especially those motivated to learn, whether it be in a classical genre or jazz improvisation. With that said, it seems that it is always the beginner I enjoy working with the most.  Welcome, all!    ~  Kathleen Wright
METHODS USED
For the beginner, I am open to method books, however, one can't rest on the guidance they provide. For note reading, nuance of sound, rhythm and timing, method books are good. Yet, technique is so very important and cannot come simply from a method book. To boost the technique, I refer often to Hanon and Czerny studies, as they are very important to establishing a fine technique.  Each student, however,  is individual and learns at his or her own pace;  this is a determining factor when selecting method books.  For some more visual learners, The Music Tree is a very effective method.  I  feel the most important thing the teacher can do is to instill and effective technique, an appreciation for subtlety of phrasing, dynamics and interpretation. If this isn't done, and only an emphasis on reading occurs, the students is often left with a stiff hand and a subsequent poor ability to play well. In short, technique on the piano is very important, especially if the goal is for the student to play accurately, smoothly and expressively. This combination is the mark of a fine artist at the piano.
LESSON STYLE
The main goal for all of my students is that they play well, experiencing full enjoyment.  I know from twenty years experience that this can only come from exemplary teaching;  the proper technique, a relaxation of the body, utilizing only energy, not tension.  A student progresses when they can play what they love with ease; to attain this, one needs to play with an absence of tension, but with free-flowing energy.  In today's hurried lifestyle, it's tantamount to return to the 'child's way' of learning with unrestrained energy, and an absence of tension.  The only result I've seen from this way is a joyous, successful one.

It is with pleasure that I write this recommendation for Ms. Kathleen W. Ms Kathleen was employed as a piano teacher at my studio, Music Makers of Western Springs, from 1984 to 1986. During that time, her roster grew to over 50 students a week. She was very professional and dependable during her time with us, and there was a waiting list for students to study with her. Her own musical talent and deep love of the piano came through to her students. She instilled in them a real joy in learning while incorporating skills and techniques of piano pedagogy learned through her own study with world class pianists. Ms Kahtleen entered her students in the National Guild of Piano adjudication and her students consistently scored in the top rankings. Their performances at recitals showed their preparation and skill. Ms. Kathleen had a kind and gentle manner and her students, from preschool to seniors, all loved studying with her. She created an atmosphere that is both friendly and inspiring. Some of her students even went on to pursue a career in music. I highly recommend Ms. Kathleen W. as a dedicated piano teacher for students of any age. Penelope Callan Founder - Music Makers of Western Springs.
