ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
DM, Florida State University, Music Composition; MM, University of Louisville, Music Composition; BA, Ohio Wesleyan University, Music Theory
Overview:
I am a thoughtful and encouraging instructor who enjoys working with students to explore their interests and deepen their understanding of and technical facility with music. I have a doctorate in Music Theory & Composition with a concentration in Composition from Florida State University, where I taught music theory and aural skills courses as instructor of record for three years. Throughout my degrees, I continued to study viola and performed with orchestras on both violin and viola. I have also enjoyed performing in pit orchestras for musical theatre and opera.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching music lessons back in my high school days and immediately discovered a passion for sharing my areas of expertise with others in an incredibly interactive manner. During the last three years, I've further cultivated that passion for teaching both in a classroom and individual lesson setting during my graduate work at Florida State. The reason I teach is to help shape future generations into critical thinkers. And more specifically, I teach music because good musicians are good citizens. Developing musicianship involves the cultivation of effective practice methods, coordinating dedicated effort with deliberate, thoughtful engagement. Musicians must also balance aesthetic appreciation with analytical inquiry, and become masters of time management. To these ends, I encourage my students to become self-directed learners, to expand their horizons, and to make connections between various areas of study.
METHODS USED
For students beginning within the context of a school orchestra program, I prefer to begin within the pedagogical book of choice of the school program (e.g. Hal Leonard's Essential Elements) before branching out into other methods and repertoire such as the Suzuki school. For intermediate and adult students, I try to adapt repertoire and activity selection to his or her own interests, and find a balance between addressing important technique learning tasks and music that keeps the student excited and engaged.
LESSON STYLE
It is incredibly rewarding to see students developing both a love for and skills in music. Modeling effective practice techniques is high priority during lesson time so that students can make progress at their own pace outside of lesson time as well as in lesson time. To this end, I also provide students with a list of goals and reminders to aid practice between lessons. I find it important to acknowledge student successes is important to building confidence and creating a positive learning experience, in addition to identifying and correcting problems.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
