Overview:
Justin picked up the trumpet at age 11 and has grown into a versatile, in-demand performer and teacher in the New Jersey / New York City metro area. With years of study across jazz, classical, blues, big-band, contemporary and pop styles, he brings deep musical knowledge and real-world experience to every lesson. Justin has performed on some of the country’s best stages—Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blue Note, Birdland, Smoke, Fatcat, Trumpets—and toured across the U.S. and Canada with Vans’ International Warped Tour. Whether you’re just starting out or preparing for auditions and gigs, Justin’s lessons focus on building beautiful tone, solid technique, confident improvisation, strong sight-reading, and effective performance skills. Students benefit from practical, style-flexible coaching rooted in decades of playing and professional stage experience. In-person lessons available in the NJ / NYC area. Ready to take your playing to the next level? Message Justin to schedule a trial lesson.
EXPERIENCE
With almost 30 years of musical experience, Justin brings patient, practical, and performance-focused instruction to students of every level. He’s taught private one-on-one lessons and classroom programs at the elementary, high school, and college levels — tailoring lessons so each student progresses quickly while enjoying the music they love. Justin studied with world-class musicians including Vincent Penzarella (New York Philharmonic), NYC jazz trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, and Broadway musician Bud Burridge. He’s had the privilege of sharing the stage with extraordinary artists such as Saturday Night Live’s trumpeter Earl Gardner, Randy Brecker, Maria Schneider, John Pattitucci, Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch, James Moody, and Jimmy Heath — experience he brings directly into lessons to teach real-world skills for auditions, gigs, and ensembles. What students get from Justin: • Technique & tone: step-by-step approaches to build a rich, controlled sound. • Musical versatility: coaching across jazz, classical, big band, blues, pop, and contemporary styles. • Performance readiness: improvisation, sight-reading, audition prep, and stage confidence. Lessons available in the NJ / NYC area (and online on request). Ready to grow your sound and reach your musical goals? Message Justin to book a trial lesson.
METHODS USED
My teaching approach is fully customized to each individual student. Every player has unique goals, strengths, and challenges, so there’s never a “one-size-fits-all” method. At the start, we’ll take time for an in-depth assessment to determine the most effective path forward based on your musical ambitions — whether that’s mastering fundamentals, preparing for auditions, or developing advanced performance skills. Lessons often draw from time-tested classics such as Arban, Schlossberg, James Stamp, Bill Adams, and Timofei Dokshizer. For students interested in modern approaches, we may also incorporate innovative methods like WindWorks, which offers a fresh perspective on sound production and efficiency. No matter which direction we take, the goal is the same: to find the approach that works best for you. By tailoring your study plan, we’ll build strong fundamentals, unlock your musical voice, and set you up for long-term success and enjoyment on the trumpet.
LESSON STYLE
I believe there’s no such thing as “difficult” in music—only unfamiliar. Learning an instrument means steadily turning the unknown into the known, whether that’s playing a single clear note or composing an entire symphony. My lessons are built around a relaxed, judgment-free environment that prioritizes curiosity, steady progress, and—most importantly—fun. When students feel comfortable and inspired, real growth follows and the rewards are endless. Interested in a trial lesson to see how enjoyable progress can be? Message me and let’s get started.
