Overview:
Music is a beautiful gift that I have been blessed to share with so many people in so many ways. As a graduate from Baylor University in 2018, I have studied String Music Education and General Music Education. In my time there I have learned the best ways to teach children in both secondary string and elementary music education. As a performer, I have had numerous opportunities through the school of music taking me to Carnegie Hall in New York, Colorado, Washington, and more as well as a full-paid position with Waco Symphony Orchestra. I have participated in many Orchestral Music Festivals and Institutes such as Aspen Music Festival, Round Top Music Festival, and the Methow Valley Music Festival to name a few! In addition, I have performed for many famous names in the classical music world such as Renee Fleming, Simone Porter, Nikolai Lugansky, and more. I am both delighted and excited to teach others about the world of music and how to perform and share their own gifts of music with their audiences.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since my late high school years. I have taught various private lessons part time in the Houston area and aided some of my teachers in teaching 5th grade strings. When I entered college, I started teaching middle school students privately in the Waco area and teaching general music education in Baylor's OsoMusical program for special needs children. I love seeing the interesting ties between elementary and secondary music education and the impact of the basic foundations of music! As a teacher, I have constantly stressed a consistent practice schedule to help with intrinsic motivation within students and love for their own instruments. My job as a private teacher is to facilitate string learning in a fun, safe, and nurturing environment for all students.
METHODS USED
For beginning students of younger ages, I begin with the basics of body awareness with your instrument. Setting that awareness up on any student, regardless of age or skill level, is the most important aspect to me as a string teacher to best avoid injury and propel success in the future. To teach beginners I use a variety of methods from Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, various technique books such as Kreutzer or Wohlfahrt, and solo literature from Suzuki Violin/Viola. For more advanced players or even older students, I tend to match a certain technique book, Baroque-Classical literature, or Suzuki Book level to their skills sets, such as Mazas or Sevcik etudes, or Bach Suites/Partitas to further boost the skills they have while targeting skills that need more foundation. In addition, I have researched various method books and arrangements for fun small performances my students can create for their friends and family. I have made arrangements to tracks from various Disney films for my students and even have copies of some other published film arrangements that also aim in helping students with more string pedagogy foundations.
LESSON STYLE
Regardless of the age, I have always felt that every student can make music. Music is a gift for all people and is continuously finding new methods of delivery every day! As a teacher, I adapt to the learning pace of every student I take on as no student is the same as the other. From the beginning of our lessons, I focus on bolstering the weaknesses of the students and polishing the strengths and skills the student already possesses. I explore many ways of learning with my students, from visual cues and writing to audial aids while playing to best accommodate for a students preferred method of material intake. In addition, I also try to set attainable goals for students to challenge them beyond what they think is possible for themselves.
