I have a passion for sharing my love of music with others. Music has played a very important role in my life from an early age. I remember listing to Classical music with my grandfather when I was 5 years old. I then later wanted to take piano but did not have the means to do so. I joined the band and learned how to read music playing the saxophone, then taught myself how to read the bass clef. I then studied organ and piano in college. I want to give the people the opportunity to take piano!!
I have been giving pointers for a long time, but I finally gained a studio 4 years ago. My studio is still small but I want to grow my studio of all ages! I want to help kids learn a language that they will be able to have for a lifetime. A skill they will have for a lifetime. A love for a lifetime! My experiences have been to make the lessons entertaining while also meaningful. To show them videos that get them excited for their instrument and learning music. My job is to push students to learn and to love!
For beginning students who are children, I start with the Faber Piano Adventures. Once the student understands and has successfully grasped the fundamentals, I begin with scales and more solo repertoire appropriate for their level and for a recital. I also teach service playing for students who want to learn how to play hymns and anthems for a church. For adults, I like to sit down and talk to the adult and find out what they want from their piano experience and then develop a plan for what a weekly lesson will look like.
My teaching style depends on each different student. It usually takes two lessons to figure out how the student learns and what is the best style. Encouragements goes a long way and are important. But also knowing how to encourage a student through no compliments can be just as an effective as a compliment. Kids require structure and that how I plan my lessons. Always learning in some form or fashion. I like to teach them how the instrument they are playing works, how the sound is made and how pianos are built. So they know the working of their instrument!
