-University of Michigan, Percussion Performance -Baruch College, Management of Musical Enterprises
Overview:
Hello! I am an energetic and driven teacher who loves sharing his knowledge of music with others! Drums are my passion, and I'm lucky enough to say that they're my profession as well! I attended the University of Michigan as a percussion performance major, and then moved to NYC because, let's be honest, there is no better place in the entire world for musicians! I offer all of my students an opportunity to play with an actively gigging teacher; someone who knows the inner workings of what it takes to make it as a musician. I also have extensive knowledge of NYSSMA and the all-regional ensembles that you can be playing with! Please feel free to peruse the rest of my page. I look forward to working with you!
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching back in high school. My teacher at the time was expanding her studio and let me teach some of her beginner students. It was clear early on that one of my strengths as an educator is my ability to explain concepts many different ways. I continued to teach percussion at the University of Michigan, and have maintained an extensive private studio in New York for the past three years. I like to challenge my students to be proud of their own hard work so that they stay driven and motivated even when they are practicing on their own. I also encourage and help all of my students to enter competitions and recitals. After all, what's the point of playing an instrument if you can't share your music with others? I have experience teaching students just starting out with drums all the way to advanced collegiate players! I am always looking to meet new students of all ages and experience levels!
METHODS USED
I like to start beginner students on method books, to help introduce the concepts of basic notation and musicianship. I like to reward students with songs that they can prepare and then perform for others. If a student is in concert band at their school, I also like to work with them on their percussion music and responsibilities. For my older students, I like to use method books and videos created by some of the best drummers in the world. I work extensively to establish a solid sense of "groove" before advancing to more technically challenging material. I work to give my students opportunities to play with other musicians, including bands and classical ensembles.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style reflects my 'work hard- play hard' approach to performing. I encourage my younger students to start with basic drum notation and dexterity. I use popular music (from all generations) to show how concepts that we learn are used by drummers all over the world. I then introduce solo repotoire and duos that the student can play with me during lessons. I also encourage parental participation for at-home practicing. I document our itinerary for the parents as well, so they can track their student's progress. For my adult students, I like to teach based on what the student is interested in learning. I also encourage my older students to play out, and I will often let my more advanced students sit in on my gigs with me! I think it is important that each student learn at his or her own rate, so I tailor my approach differently for every one of my students!
