M.M. The Juilliard School, Jazz Studies B.M. Berklee College of Music, Vibraphone Performance

Awards:

2013 - Present, Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, vibraphonist 2013 - First jazz vibraphonist accepted to The Juilliard School. 2010 - Berklee College of Music, full scholarship Endorsed by Majestic & Mapex Percussion

Overview:
I am experienced professional mallet percussionist and bandleader with an emphasis on jazz and improvisation. In 2013, I was the first jazz vibraphonist be accepted in to The Juilliard School where I had the opportunity to mentor classical percussionists on how to improvise. Prior to Juilliard, I first attended Oklahoma City University studying music education/percussion performance. After studying for two years at OCU, I decided to transfer to Berklee College of Music to study with Ed Saindon and Dave Samuels, and to be closer to my mentor, Stefon Harris.
EXPERIENCE
As a bandleader of 'Felix Peikli & Joe Doubleday's Showtime Band', I have had the opportunity to perform and teach at jazz festivals all over the world such as the Oslo Jazz Festival, Sopot Jazz Festival, Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Mid-atlantic Jazz Festival and Caribbean Jazz Festival. I also have done teaching on the university level with lessons and masterclasses at Harvard, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University of Idaho, and The Juilliard School. I also work privately with students over skype and at my studio where I have a 5 octave marimba, a 3.5 octave marimba, and two vibraphones.
METHODS USED
I like to take a holistic approach in teaching beginners by incorporating Technique, Ear Training, Music Theory, and Improvisation right from the start. This allows the student to quickly be able to learn songs by ear and write their own music. For more advanced and older students, I prefer to see where they are in their first lesson and hear what their goals are. Some people do not care if they can read music or not and that is totally cool! What is more important is having a good ear and being able to really understand how music works. Students will also have the opportunity to work on either 4 mallets or two mallets depending on goals and ability level.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style caters to each students needs. Exercises can be created and personalized to accomplish certain goals such as chop building and accuracy drills, or pattern recognition. My lessons are typically broken down into segments. Starting with ear training drills/music theory, warm up/scales, etude practice, and improvisation/free play at the end. The music theory will use "The Jazz Piano Book" by Mark Levine as a reference along with Berklee Theory 1-4 The songs that we learn can be picked by you!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
