I am retired professor of guitar and harmony, and an accomplished and award winning classical guitarist, who studied under Jose Luis Rodrigo, Jose Tomas and Oscar Giglia and Jose Luis Gonzalez, direct students of Andres Segovia I am now a private tutor in classical, jazz, blues and acoustic guitar. I also teach harmony and transcription. I also transcribe music for musicians for who do not read or write music. I recently relocated from London to New Orleans and I continue to teach my London students online with good results. Occasionally I perform for private events and accompany singers.
I have been teaching in private and university class settings for more than 30 years. My students are serious musicians--classical or jazz and blues--seeking to enhance their technique and music interpretation, and also students of harmony, and young students (ages 8 and above) just beginning . Studying music should be fun and it is important to motivate students by giving them lessons that feed their interest and motivate them to play for pleasure as well as for practice. My approach is different for each student--there is not set curriculum--and very geared to the student's interests and helping the student overcome difficulties. In my London teaching I am rated by my students with 5 starts, the highest rating.
I do not work from a fixed set of books or lessons. My approach is alway different for each student and will depend on the age and time the student has to devote to the instrument. In addition to teaching basic technique, learned from the master of classical guitar and jazz, my method is to motivate the student to play and overcome the difficulties of the instrument. In classical guitar, there are basically two attacks: rest and free stroke. With these attacks, depending on the context of the music, the student will be able to interpret what the composer wants in a piece. It is also very important to have an analyze the music and know the form, the history behind the style of the piece. When it comes to jazz, the student needs to be able to hear the changes and to transcribe the music. Music is auditory language and needs to be learned through the ear rather than the eyes. I have huge enthusiasm for teaching and each of my students.
Every student is different and it is very interesting to me to guide each one to fulfil their goals. I often use software that is helpful in teaching, like Transcribe, Band in a Box , and other software to write music, backing tracks, etc. Student motivation is the main goal and of course determines the style and content of my teaching . I will research pieces for the student to play based on their interest and their level and needs. I also encourage them to sing as they play, as a way of internalizing the music.
