ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Jazz composition, Berklee College of Music

Overview:
I've been playing music for most of my life. I began playing violin at age 5 and guitar at 10. Music has been my primary focus and love for almost fifty years. For me composing/writing, performing, producing, recording, mixing, mastering, music copying, album design, photography are all part of the process of making music. All or some of these skills I enjoy passing along to my students. I have performed in venues from the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap, to clubs in New York City, Boston and Los Angeles.
EXPERIENCE
There is nothing I love more than sharing what I have learned over the course of my life. Helping someone on their way to mastering a musical instrument is always exciting. I began teaching in my early twenties, something that's always given me immense pleasure. Since that time, I have studied other instruments to differing degrees of success including but not limited to saxophone, chromatic harmonica, and drums. With each new instrument I learn, I'm afforded the opportunity to revisit my own teaching method.
METHODS USED
There's more to learning to play an instrument than scales and chords. My teaching method is more holistic covering, as needed, technique, interpretation, theory, performance, ear training, music listening, transcription, music copying, the mechanics of the instrument. We usually begin with pad and pen and move from there. When suitable, an appropriate method book or specific texts are chosen. My method also includes time playing together. I've found that at a certain point much can be taught through playing in a duo setting.
LESSON STYLE
Because we're all different and each of us has our own particular way of learning, I tailor each student's lessons to their particular needs. Throughout the lessons, my focus is first on comprehension and understanding of concepts and techniques, then on usage and performance. The lessons are geared more toward learning and application rather than amassing any number of ideas and skills that have little or no real world value. I also feel listening and transcription are invaluable to learning any instrument. These are also covered in our lessons.

My 4 1/2 year old daughter has enjoyed taking lessons. Each week Jonathan presents a new learning objective while continuously building upon the previously learned material. Jonathan is nice, patient and encouraging, all the while being engaging to keep the violin lesson on track.

We LOVE Mr. Jonathan! He is patient, friendly, light-hearted, and really creative in teaching tough music concepts! He is always on time, very conscientious and personable and obviously loves what he is doing. His approach to learning and practice are perfect for our 7 year-old wannabe rockstar :)

Jonathan is fantastic. Our daughter really responds to him. Very flexible and easy to work with on scheduling. He built his own app for his students to practice note recognition. Highly recommend.

Mr. Jonathan is amazing. He worked with my 4-5 year old daughter on both violin and piano and I couldn’t be more impressed with his patience, expertise, and overall ability to work with such a young student (who was also a bit challenging behavior-wise). He is incredibly professional and I would recommend him to anyone!

Jonathan is a terrific violin teacher. He has been working with my daughter for the last few years and the progress has been amazing. She is almost eight and is now comfortable reading notes and understanding how to break down songs to learn on her own. She is comfortable playing short songs by memory and learning to better understand rhythm. Most importantly she likes playing and Jonathan really works to make practice fun. Also, even having virtual lessons over the last 8 months, Jonathan has really kept the lessons interesting and our daughter still is learning/playing a lot during the lessons.

Jonathan is terrific. He is really helping me through the basics. I had guitar lessons before and the teacher failed to do that. As a result, I developed bad habits and couldn't play well. Learning guitar is hard (for me) and Jonathan is cheerful and VERY encouraging. He has helped me continue through hard times.

Jonathan is a great teacher. He really focuses on why you do something before getting into how you do it. Supportive and easy to talk to, I’d definitely recommend him.

Jonathan is a fantastic teacher! After having numerous guitars for most of my 60 years of life and never learning to play, I decided to get serious and learn to really play. I found Jonathan and got started at age 59! He has a way of teaching and explaining musical basics that makes them less daunting. I also appreciate his patience and encouragement. I recommend him highly!

Knowledgeable. Patient. Clear. I study music theory, composition, orchestration, and bass with Jonathan and can’t recommend him enough. I’ve improved in all areas so much since studying with him and I credit his teaching skills to my results.

I’ve been taking bass guitar lessons with Jonathan since 2019, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. His teaching style is clear, supportive, and completely tailored to his students’ needs. He even created a couple of custom lesson books to help me deepen my understanding—something you rarely find in a teacher. Jonathan’s knowledge of music theory and history is top-notch, and his encouragement has made all the difference in my musical journey. The day he talked me out of backing out of lessons was the start of one of the most rewarding hobbies of my adult life. Thanks to his guidance, I went from a living room recital to playing in a local DC band. If you’re on the fence about lessons, don’t hesitate—Jonathan is the real deal. – Marck-Arthur

I've been taking lessons with Jonathan Townes for about a year now, and it's been the best experience I’ve had with any music teacher. He's incredibly supportive and always makes time to help. What really stands out is that he doesn’t just teach music, he genuinely cares about his students and takes the time to understand who they are. With Jonathan, I’ve made more progress than I ever have before, and I’ve enjoyed every step of the journey. Highly recommend him to anyone serious about improving and growing as a musician.

Jonathan is a great music teacher! I had no knowledge of stringed instruments and chose the bass guitar. Jonathan is very patient and adapts to his student's needs. If you're looking for a good music teacher, give Jonathan a try!

Jonathan worked with My 7th grade grandaughter. His calm nature eased her into a relaxed repair. We had to take time off due to end of school year activities and summer and plan to start back up once time allows. I would reccommend Jonathan as he exceeded my expections!

Johnathan is incredible to work with and his lessons was something I looked forward to each week. He’s consistently positive, funny, and encouraging. He was incredibly flexible and understanding about lesson changes or limited practice time when life was busy. Johnathan provides an endless amount of resources, practice strategies/tips, and advice based off what works best for you. I worked with him for 1.5 years in college and can no more highly recommend a teacher than I do Johnathan.

We are learning! My son is very active, maybe on the ADHD side, it is not easy to teach a 7y old boy who would rather be elsewhere. But we are making progress and Jonathan is pulling us forward. Well done and thank you!

Jonathan a gifted violin teacher with a flexible, supportive approach. I love taking lessons with him. He does a great job of exposing students to the traditional vocabulary and approaches and at the same time comes at teaching from a new angle, explaining things in different ways to find what clicks. The breadth of his musical influences is also wonderful and makes it even more exciting to continue to grow musically. Also, I'm returning to violin after a long time, and he is so understanding of the differences (strengths as well as challenges) for an adult learner. I recommend him enthusiastically for any level of player.

As an adult trying to learn a new instrument, Jonathan has been wonderful. I have learned so much about music theory as well as how to play. I appreciate most the way Jonathan answers all my questions every lesson and take time to make sure I understand what I need to improve and progress. I am impressed by how much I learn each week and how much I improve.
