Overview:

Hello, everyone! My name is Dr. John T. I have been teaching private voice lessons since 1995. I've been at it for awhile now, and have been loving the journey, for sure. I earned my Bachelor's and Masters in Music from New Mexico State University in 1995 and 1997, respectively. I then earned my Doctorate in Music in Voice Performance from the University of Memphis in 2003. I am married to my wife of four years, Deanna, and we have a precious little girl, Braelyn, who just turned two this Easter! We are expecting number two around Thanksgiving time of this year, so we are super excited to be growing our family!

EXPERIENCE

I started teaching voice in 1995 while serving as a graduate assistant at NMSU. I had my own studio of college students and adults from the community. I continued teaching while working on my DMA at the University of Memphis. While serving on faculty at Huntington University, I maintained a voice studio of college students, both majors and minors, but also had my own private studio of community students. I continued teaching voice lessons to students while teaching high school in Fort Wayne. Since living in Knoxville, TN since 2013, I have taught voice lessons through the Crown Conservatory of Music as the Chair of the Music Department. I have taught college music majors and minors, non-majors, and community students ranging from 12 to adult learners. I am proficient in working with all voice types and teaching many different styles.

METHODS USED

I start each lesson by setting the breath. I want my students to master the fundamentals of breathing, which consists of both breathing in and breathing out. The sound we make travels on the air, so it's important to learn how to use the air properly. If they don't use the air properly, they will compensate and sustain the sound with excessive tension. So, we spend a few minutes each lesson setting the breath. Then, I do some light exercises customized to the student. The exercises are where they apply the concepts taught in setting the breath, but also where they learn to sing with proper vowel production. I use the vowel chart in Joan Wall's International Phonetic Alphabet for Singers as a way of explaining how each vowel is formed. I also like to have them vocalize using certain words or phrases from pieces they are working on to reinforce certain vowel changes and how to connect the breath. Then, the rest of the lesson is spent working on assigned repertoire. This process is a lot of fun, and completely customized to the individual student's needs.

LESSON STYLE

I love the process of building a voice. This process requires patience as you are dealing with live muscles that are constantly changing and growing and increasing in capacity. I believe excellence is formed through the small daily habits that students establish and continue over time. Habits compound over time into big results, be they good or bad, so it's important to form the right habits with practice and lifestyle choices. I want my students to learn how to use their voices healthily so they can use it for the rest of their lives. Your body is your instrument, so it's important to take care of it. I believe that a classical foundation is the healthiest foundation from which a voice is built. Once that foundation is laid, however, students can adapt that to any style, be it classical, gospel, jazz, pop, musical theatre, etc. It is important that students learn to love the process. Putting the focus on the process allows the voice to grow healthily at its own pace, but also yields the desired outcome over time.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
