Bachelor Degree: California Polytechnic University
Hi! I am excited to share my knowledge and love of music with students! I graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2018 with a degree in music (focus in voice). Although I ended my degree with a focus in voice, I have been playing music my whole life and have a background in instrumental music as well. In addition to singing, I also play the flute, saxophone, and piano. To me, music is about expressing yourself and enjoy what you're doing. I really love teaching healthy singing techniques and love connecting with people about music!
I have experience teaching private music lessons as well as teaching children in an educational setting. My approach to teaching is that it's a two way street. Each person learns a concept in a different way and it's important for both the teacher and the student to communicate freely about what things may work for them and what does not. I am an open person and easy to talk to about how to go about training the voice. I do believe that when someone is learning how to sing, it is very important to also learn some music theory as it helps train the ear and helps the student understand the music better.
Since each student is different, it's important to communicate about what specifically the student would like to work on. I want to mold each lesson to the particular student I am working with to best help that individual. However, I think it is important for all students to learn about vocal health and vocal exercises. With these skills, student will be able to strengthen their voice and protect it from injury. I also am flexible on what repertoire a student would like to learn but am happy to find appropriate repertoire for a student.
I am a good listener and want to make sure the student is getting what they want from a lesson. I also like to use light humor and wit to ease conversations. Singing should be a time to have fun and be yourself! I like to encourage students to continue to grow and not feel discouraged if they are not where they want to be. Progress happens over time and it's important to remind everyone of that. I like to find out about the student and connect with him/her, then tailor the lesson to fit his/her needs.
