BM, City College of New York Classical Guitar Performance AAS, Queensborough CC Audio Engineering
I come from a classical background, receiving a bachelor's degree in classical guitar performance, thus my expertise is in classical music, flamenco, folk, fingerpicking, and just acoustic guitar in general. However, I have experience in electric guitar and bass guitar as well, playing rock, pop, blues, and many other styles. I have performed in classical ensembles, rock bands, and currently perform as a solo artist. These different playing and music styles have given me great flexibility, both as a performer and an instructor.
I have been teaching for nearly twenty years now, starting in college. I have taught mostly in one on one private lessons, allowing the most focused approach to learning and mastering an instrument. However, I also have taught group classes, directed ensemble groups and rock bands, giving me a lot of experience in different settings. I have taught students of all ages and skill levels, taking many from complete beginners to intermediate and advanced players. I have taught in music academies, music stores, and privately in my home studio or at students homes.
For young students I like to give a full well rounded education, focusing on guitar playing as well as music theory and music reading. I use several sheets from my book collection and also make my own sheets. These pages are included with the lessons, so there is no need to purchase any books as I provide the study materials at the appropriate times as the student grows in skills and experience. For adult students I focus on the clients interests while still guiding them to music reading and theory, as appropriate. I also have many sheets which are included in the lessons that I use, and also accommodate to whatever interests, styles, songs the student may have.
I am a believer in making music fun at all times, especially with young kids. If the guitar is not fun, and instead becomes a chore, students are less likely to practice and in time give up the instrument altogether. While still focusing on correct technique, music reading and theory, I add these elements in a way that is fun and intuitive, making progress easier. I like to use songs that the student likes as study materials, making the student learn valuable techniques and concepts while rocking out to their favorite tunes.
