2018 - William Paterson University Outstanding Classical Performer
Overview:
I'm a very experienced music teacher and performer. I have been teaching music for over 6 years and I have been playing music over 12 years. I graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelors degree in Music Education and with a minor in Jazz Performance. I teach locally at Newark public schools and I am also the pit/indoor director at west Essex high school. I currently play with many NJ based ensembles such as the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, The Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra, The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, and The Bound Brook Orchestra. I also play in a rock group called "Remember Yesterday."
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience pre-dates college. I started teaching private drum-set lessons when I was in high school - I was also section leader so I would frequently hold after school sectionals with the entire percussion section. After going to college I started to teach more and more privately, gaining more students here and there. Once I started my practicum and student teaching experience I was teaching in many public schools districts of ranging variety from - Paterson public schools, to Allendale public schools, then to Wayne public schools -ranging from grade levels K to 12th grade. Currently I teach in Newark public schools K-8th grade and I teach high school marching band
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I normally start with a basic Hal Leonard beginning instrument book. Once the student has progressed through the book and developed some technical facility, I will introduce a solo repertoire piece. For adults I try to start them off with a adult version of the appropriate begging instrument book. I try to make the curriculum for adults more based on their interested in regards to their ability level. I always try to make sure that the lessons involve some sort of duo jamming (Myself and student) and improvisation based on current technical needs.
LESSON STYLE
I always like to have the students first develop a strong interest in music right away - so I like to start off with something that specifically interest them - song, piece....ect. Once the student is able to feel the joy from playing, it makes the learning process feel much less cumbersome and much more enjoyment based. From here, I like to move at the appropriate pace of the student, incorporating technique, theory, performance, and improvisation into every lesson. Each student will have the appropriate method book that caters to them along with a piece of solo repertoire that suits their technical needs. Every lesson will start with a goal and end with a new one that is to be set for next time.
