I have performed with orchestral, Church, Jazz, Band and Chamber Music ensembles in Cleveland Ohio and Detroit,MI. I studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Linda Muhlert(Frumker). I also had some lessons with Myron Bloom of the Cleveland Orchestra. In the Southfield Symphony Orchestra, I performed next to Bryan Kennedy of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as 2nd horn on the Maurice Ravel Mother Goose Suite. I performed in a horn quartet with James McHard,AliceMchard and Frank Hussey.
I have taught off and on throughout my horn career with emphasis mainly on performance of orchestral repertoire. I have performed in numerous community bands as well in the Detroit metro-area. I worked on the Beethoven Horn Sonata OP.#17 with a Piano major when I lived in San Francisco. I have been playing the horn since 1966.
I like to use Kopprasch etudes and James Chambers orchestral excerpts. But like to settle on a warm-up style that the student prefers. I focus on breath control, dynamics, legato and staccato execution and when the student has mastered this we move on to making music, not playing notes.
My style is to review a previous lesson with playing a "homework" etude or study and early on have the student pay close attention to dynamics. I like to encourage younger students and challenge the more advanced students to think in terms of musical interpretations based on what the composer is trying to convey.
